Here you can see the diagonal stripes crossing each other to create a single moving intersection. This dot should scan across every point in the image, eventually. This works because the two tapes are moving in opposite directions but at slightly different speeds.
This was used to bring image data into Scratch using the photo sensor on a Scratch board. If the scan lines are synchronized with a renderer (scratch.mit.edu/projects/jywarren/293414) an image is produced.
