When I first saw this film... I took the information provided in good faith. But with a bit more digging I started questioning your (sourceless as of 21/02/2011) figure that 73.5% of Punjabi youth are drug addicts. Reminds me of the saying, "lies, damn lies and statistics." Although still relatively high, I've been informed the figure is probably below 7%. This makes more sense too me, as I don't even know a Punjabi girl who drinks let alone who does drugs. 73% would suggest a massive percentage would also have to be female, which doesn't ring anywhere near true to me, when considering Punjabi culture. Punjabi men might live in excess, but culturally Punjabi women don't tend to follow anywhere near that mould.

I believe Congress is portraying a negative narrative of Punjab for purely party political reasons. Despite the propagandist onslaught Punjab recieves we are still remain the strongest, financially and martially. The statement that the Indian Army can't fill its quota in Punjab maybe true, but not for your stated reason (that 3/4 of us are drug addicts). Along with Chandigarh Police the Indian Army doesn't want to recruit Punjabi Sikhs, specifically Sikh Jatts. Secularism, shouldn't mean destroying cultures or religious identies to form a monotone, colourless, flavourless, singular Indian identity. Congress secularism, should be rebranded Congress singularism. But still.. ingnoring probable gross statistical inaccuracies, I appreciate your film highlights the plight of still far too many.

This video is very informative and eye opening. I think educating the youth of Punjab by playing this type of video in schools can be beneficial as it will encourage them to reflect on the drug situation at a younger age.
  • N7Films 1 year ago
:) That is what we aimed to achieve. To create awareness amongst the next generation of Punjab so as to salvage them from the drug epidemic and start working on the restoration of Punjab through like minded individuals.

It was not clear whether this is
    > An awareness video about drug abuse in Punjab
    > A campaign film for Ravneet Singh Bittu or
    > A perspective on Vijay Simha or
    > All of these together

Good camera work, lighting and choice of the anchor.

This was just a student initiative taken as a first step towards awareness of how the drug epidemic is in state of Punjab. I would request you to not politicize the issue at all. We have no affiliations with anyone and represent only ourselves. We tried taking everyone's perspective, but only people who agreed for the interviews and whoever we could reach in our own capacity are in the documentary. Thank you for your appreciation. :)

:) This is not a singular issue and the blame is on each one of us irrespective. Instead of pointing fingers, we should join our efforts in combatting it. Its due to our, each one of us, negligence that this exists in Punjab and only our unity can take it out of this mess.

I am from Punjab Pakistan. I am very sad to see Punjabi people are going through the pain of drug use. Drugs kills. Its wrong to politicize and blaming Pakistan for it. As long there is a demand , drugs will travel from Afghanistan to Pakistan to India. In other hand lots of alcohol travels from Indis to Pakistan. So yes officials are to be blames and the education needed. I was raised in Punjab , We saw people dying with drugs. One thing I have learned over the time. That people who get on drugs should not be ignored as they do in Pakistan. Family rejects them, I think they need more love and acceptance. If anything will help that will be love. I hope both Governments can work on this issue and stop this traveling from Afghanistan. India has good relations with Afghanistan. May be they can stop from Afghanistan.
Punjab must live on, Punjabi must live on. Ameen
  • N7Films 1 year ago
I agree. We documented the information we received, without any interruption or defacement. What information we received are from the sources within the documentary itself. The drug route does exists and yes as you rightly said till the demand is there, the supply will be prevalent. I also do hope the governments will notice this before it is all too late for Punjab.

  • Pavneet Gill 1 year ago
This video would have been more creditable and touching , if politics had been kept aside from it. I agree tht there is a problem of drugs in Punjab , but you cant say that it has started in last 4 years. It has been there in for at least 10 years now....

The mesage of the video has a clear undertone of elections that are coming in punjab next year....Rahul Bose just emphasizing on the 4 years and then in a way giving a message for a certain change is just a sham..... which makes it really disgusting...because if people want to help the society, then why make it a political issue.
  • N7Films 1 year ago
I believe its you who is politicizing the issue. The figure of 4 years is about the increase in substance abuse due to mass availability of drugs and has nothing to do with the tenure of the political party. Our efforts are towards awareness and has no relation with politics. The change called for is an individual, imminent change that each one of us needs to take up and is completely independent from the government as it is quite evident itself whichever government would be ruling, they are helpless in solving this issue. Please refrain from dwelling into politics too much and understand the actual message in the documentary. Rest I leave to you.

Ravneet I agree with you. Many Indians disagreeing with the percentage mentioned in this video and laughing. And Sardar ji saying Pakistan is using drugs as weapon is another atempt to fool great brave people of Punjab India to turn against Pakistan.
here is one of the post from fb
Teja Samra Lol, not true. Just because we love drinking Coronas, doesn't make us drug addicts. 73.5% is innacurate, was there last year and hung out a lot for a month. Alcohol consumptions is part of youth life, shouldn't be counted and watch that precentage go wayyyyyy down. So if we were to do a study in America, does that mean 99% of American youth is addicted to drugs since alcohol is a big part of american party lifestyle? Caffiene and Nicotine are considered drugs as they are CNS stimulants. I wonder if they counted that figure into 73.5%. Makes me want to go to Punjab and slap some drugs out of the youth.

I would be interested in setting up a conference call line with N7Films and others on this thread to understand the current action steps to combat this. Please email me if interested kevinshundal@yahoo.com.

In reading the thread and understanding Punjab I can't say that the statistics are spot on..but I do believe we have a major issue. Weather 10% or 74%, we have an issue. Let's work towards a solution.

Its a welldone video to show what our Homeland Punjab is going through right now but it seems some stats in it are completely off. It cant be 74% drug addicts in punjab.. I recently went there and I do think the drugs are problem for our youth there. But the only way we cam overcome this is by WILL POWER!!.. I think after the 1980s and 90s MILLITANCY the central Govt of India did brought these addictive drugs to our Homeland PUNJAB to paralyze the youth of PUNJAB so that there will be so such repeat of 1980s and 90s. The GOVT of INDIA killed 70% of the youth in border areas of Punjab during late 80s and 90s there were villages in some parts of PUNJAB with no youths.. Now they are killing our Homeland Punjab with DRUGS. These guys decided to bring this issue of DRUGS in Punjab what about the GENOCIDE of SIKHS in 1984.. all the culprits are walking freely and it too bad for SIKHS that we have a SIKH PM who is leading the party as a PUPPEtT for that party.

We are PUNJABI and I am proud to be one.. I think we will be able to over come this DRUG Nexus tooo

have been spending much of my time in the Punjab and working on agriculture in various areas. I like your film and it's an important area you are looking into but I feel that the 74% figure is a little too alarming. Yes people take drugs, smoke a bit of grass, have a drink... so do I but I'm no drug addict. I feel that because of the culture, religious aspect, the people ringing the bells do not really understand the new cultures beginning to move in. India is awash with drugs, hard drugs, and during my time around the Punjab I saw little evidence of it... just men getting pissed before heading home to eat and sleep it off.
I have spent much of my time in remote and urban areas of India and the drink has become very much of this new culture... but its not just the Punjab.

Much of this is born of a hopelessness and this hopelessness is everywhere and in the Punjab linked very much to agricultural policy and the rapid dimise of their resource base. The drug issue is just one of many negative externalities of this policy. I think more alarming is the loss of life from suicide and cancer now beginning to rip the cultural identity of this once beautiful proud land.
As a result of this failed policy driven by the US and Europe, the Indian government are now moving to a second green revolution and an even more extreme version of what took place in 1966 will rip the soul out of this land and its people.. and thy call it progress!! Good luck with it all. Just made a film about this if you want to see it..vimeo.com/20829944

Wow, you have no idea how valuable your insights were. I know of you through a cousin of mine who shared your videos of Orissa and in fact I saw some of your stuff while I was sitting editing Glut. So you commenting here is kind of a full circle. :)

I agree the figure is alarming and in all honesty could very well be far from the actual percentage but this figure was resonated in 4 different sources. UNODC's independent study, articles in Tehelka as well as The Telegraph. There are more shocking revelations which we didn't mention such as The Punjab Department of Social Security Development of Women and Children conducted a survey in 2005 and found 67 per cent of the rural households in Punjab having one drug addict each. Plus Dr Ravinder Singh Sandhu, Professor, Department of Sociology, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in his book mentions that the figure is close to 75% of the youth through his independent study. We just documented these findings as to conduct an independent survey was beyond our means, both financially and practically.

As per the drug intake situation, I too agree about single time users not being addicts. Everyone does some stuff once in a while ad yes they can't be labeled but as you rightly pointed it out, the connotation that it bring due to the indian culture is quite degrading and hence most being alarmed by it.

P.S. I plan to go to Orissa soon to document the many tribals living in the state. As paternally, I belong from there and have many relatives still residing there, there is an instant connection for that state. Do tell me if you are still in India, I would love to work with you, moreover learn from you and maybe assist you in your next project. Hope all is well :)

the thing is, is that I don't need to come from the Punjab to understand, this is not just a Punjabi problem, it's a global one. When you begin to destroy community cohesion and cultural identity and change society to one obsessed with material gain then provide little opportunity for sustainable wealth growth you create a vacuum, an empty space.. this is what we have, little hope for a future when you have lost so much. Come to London and see the drug abuse we have, the binge drinking and class A abuse... its off the scale. Have a look at some of Nick Broomfields early film about government policy to up root communities and move them into apartment blocks, sell off industry and undermine local agriculture and sustainability... its all the same, just a different place. Punjab is on the cusp of a crisis and it will only get worse as the current policy is to move agricultural investment into areas that have yet to be exploited.. its about the bigger picture and that's where we need to be focused if we are really serious about making change. But... no one seem to care. Carry on with our mindless jobs and keep buying the same shit. Someone else will sort it out for us. I will be back in the Punjab in a few weeks and if anyone would like to meet and talk I would be more than happy to. My number is 09910849918. J x

Very nice documentary and excellent work done by your team in touching this issue and making people aware of this problem. I also hail from Jammu and have very close assosciation with Punjab, i do agree there is drug menace in the rural punjab society but cant digest these figures of 73.5%, no offense to Mr. Professor ji, but cannot accept someones individual feeling about this sensitive issue and unrealistic figures, and drug problem is there since long back, somehow i dont agree that this %age has grown upto 73.5% in only last 4 years. But i must commend your good work and i love the spirit with which you guys are addressing these social problems infecting our rich cultural society. I'll be glad if i could help this cause in anyway. Thanks.
