Wood is a hygroscopic material, which means it has the ability to respond to changes in relative humidity in its surroundings with dimensional changes. I have made a proposal for how we can strategically plan fibre orientation to pre- specify how a laminated wood element will shape when the relative humidity is changing. The inspirational source was how pine cones are opening when it is time to release the seeds.
Through this video the new shaping technique is made visual. What you see is the drying of the wood elements in a stop motion movie. The deformation is what shapes the elements. After shaping, the wood elements will continue to respond to the humidity level in the environment by contraction or swell in a narrower range.
