This video shows at least 10,000 Ross' Geese returning to their roosting ponds at Merced National Wildlife Refuge, California, at dusk on February 9th, 2011. My wife Claudia captured the video footage, while our friend Kirk and I were taking stills.
We had hoped the main flock of geese would return to this pond, and they did. The opening shot shows this flock in the distance, as Kirk and I get ready to photograph them landing. Later you see groups taking off, shifting their position, then more large flocks arriving. At the end of the video are a few stills that I made that evening.
Watching this was an incredible experience. I hope the video conveys some of the sound and motion of the event. The next clip, Morning Fly-Out, shows the equally spectacular lift-off the next morning.
