Honestly, who cares? I got brightkite... Not even remotely as cool as twitter is... Who is gonna use this thing and why do I care what people around me are doing? Seriously.... Someone clue me in on this crap!

Isn't this a solution in search of a problem?

How often are you just wandering around looking for friends to meet up with? I admire the tech behind this, but I'm not clear on what the average user would do with it. I can see the novelty wearing off quickly, as it just adds to the distractions in a day.

I think the last thing I need is people messaging me every 5 minutes because they happen to be nearby and want to know what I'm doing?

Will be cool f it turns out to be a larger community than a bunch of guys all asking "where's the chicks??"

Did you notice the battery on the iPhone being used? :o) I can imagine all of this network and GPS activity killing power quite fast.

Looks nice but it won't fly until it can run in the background. Or even better: in the network.
I want notifications of friends when they are around even when the app is not running on any phone.
That's what Loopt is able to do because Loopt has access to the operator's servers that can ask the network where people are.

Okay; so let me fill you in on the big picture for those of you who are confused or don't see the relevance of what Brightkite is doing. It's a nifty thing.
What you are witnessing/participating in is the future of marketing. The technology being created to GPS your friends is a test market for advertising. In fact, it's already being used in a few large stores; primarily in China. When a customer enters a store, the signal is tracked and said customer will now receive an instant message from the store. Current sales, etc.
On a larger marketing platform, chains such as Starbucks will "buy" advertising in that when you are meandering down the street at 9:00am, you will receive a message such as, "For the next five minutes, recieve "offerofferoffer". The nearest Starbucks is _____". Pretty nifty, yes? Way to be on the edge of a revolution, BrightKite!

I hope you are being ironic, aren't you? Because that kind of marketing just sounds totally awful to me.
  • Laura Wynn 1 year ago
NO, it's true. I can't say it won't be annoying, but it will be done. Eventually our cell phones will have the same tracking ability that you find in geographic and demographic online marketing today. Ever notice that when you sign up for something, (Hhmmmm... like social websites) that you are asked personal info and shortly thereafter the ads you see on sites you visit seem appropriate for your spending habits? NOT a coincidence, my friend.
Remember in the 80's (for those of you who were born!) when we made fun of the "computer geeks" and said they didn't have a clue? Well, take another look! They be no dummies.
