absolutely beautiful - Nice work. What software did you use to create your piece. Very 2001 feel to it.. and that's not a bad thing at all.
  • Aaron Ross 1 year ago
Thanks. I used Maya, After Effects and a little Shake.
  •
  • mind boggling

Wow, that has to be one of the most incredible shorts I've seen, student or otherwise. What are you doing now?
  • Aaron Ross 1 year ago
I'm working on Ice Age 3 at Blue Sky Studios in New York.
  • Bruce Floyd 1 year ago
Hey... you work with a friend of mine from HS... Linda M. Very cool short, btw!

    jaw-dropping.

I'm still waiting for someone to make the film, Fincher finally gave up due to a lack of script, or so he says....u should def pursue it...
  • Casey Pugh plus 1 month ago
I loved the book so much. I really wish there was a film being made.

Very inspiring! How did you do the bit where the hand opens the circular door? Was that a giant set piece or was there mounds of compositing involved? Looks great.

The scope reminds me of this project I helped out on: vimeo.com/1118299
  • Aaron Ross 1 year ago
That was me on a greenscreen stage turning a green wheel and I animated a cg wheel to match. You can see it in the making of video here:
    vimeo.com/2042295

Your project looks like it was much bigger in scope. Very impressive, congrats.

beautiful, the animation is so subtle and delicate...
did you use motion capture for the human characters?

EDIT: oh lol, they're video! They fit so seamlessly!
  • Aaron Ross 1 year ago
Ha! Well, we were actually shot on film and scanned at 2K. It made the greenscreen keying a lot easier.

excellent work makes me want to read the book again but if I remember the ending ... the Ramans did everything by 3.... so you have 2 more to go...

For some reason, this reminds me almost exactly of the video game "The Dig" by Lucasarts. Anyway, awesome.

Wow I just signed up here after being referred by a friend and this was the first video presented to me after logging in. I havent read this book in over 15 years but I think you captured alot of the feeling... like someone else said, very 2001.

So, when's the next episode? Iceage can wait :)

    (PS: HD!)
  • Aaron Ross 1 year ago
Ice Age pays my mortgage :)

It would be fun to do a part 2, but a big challenge too since it would have to show a lot more of the interior of Rama.

Watching this was the high point of my day. After years of hearing this and that about a film adaptation involving Morgan Freeman and David Fincher (which now seems unlikely to come to fruition), it's nice to see someone put some real effort into scratching the surface of Rama, if only for a few minutes. VERY nice work.

Bloody Hell! That completely takes me back to the feelings of awe and scale I felt on reading the book.
I should stop piddling about with my camera phone....I feel so small!

Looks awesome. The space suites are from Red Planet.
Did you have real actors in suites? or grab the suites from the movie and paste in your faces?
  • Aaron Ross 1 year ago
We rented a suit from Warner Bros and took turns wearing it for each pass, then I duplicated us in post.
  • Uponaschoolcloud 1 year ago
    Speechless.
    Should you consider a sequel...I'm in !
One of the suits :) of course

I wish I'd know what the guy sees in the end

Love the 2001 feeling, two thumps up! =)
Btw, who much time takes to render that in the year 2001? xD (i use maya too)
  • Aaron Ross 1 year ago
Thanks! The scenes were pretty simple, Maya render only and video res, so most shots took 5 minutes a frame or less.

    Wow... This is really great.

No wonder that artistic expression does not lie in Hollywood but in filmmakers with a ot of time on their hands.

I think my dad would find this awesome!
