It looks as if stepping on wet sand dries the sand surrounding your feet, but how does downward pressure dry the sand? Is it just an illusion?

p.s. If you don't know the answer, 'like' this vid so more people will see it and someone will give us the answer!

I would guess that your weight packs the sand down so much that the water has nowhere else to go but out. Like a sponge or something I don't care.

I've always wondered this, too. Good luck!

Ah, I assumed your explanation was an educated guess. Is that true, then? My apologies if you thought I was trying to discredit you.

Water is lighter than sand, the pressure makes it move since the sand cannot. Like Chris said, it is like a sponge that you apply pressure on with your hands (at first, I didn't understand his comparison).

So, you went to the beach huh! :) Best from your bestest Düsseldorf friend!

Wet sand has a different refractive index then dry sand, so your body weight pushes away the water and...

my guess: watch how the ring gets bigger as more weight is applied. the weight of your foot displaces the sand. the sand under your foot goes down and out. the sand around your foot raises and the water stays level.

That's my best guess, too. Makes sense (thought that doesn't necessarily mean it's right..)
