Joe - now how do I blend external data into the coloring? Say I have a file with the population per state, how do I color the states by this population?

Joe, I have done all this, seemed to be working great, but I fall at the final hurdle - it seems I might have a shape file using some other co-ordinate system than Lat/Long - possible eastings/northings as is often used in the UK. Do you know if this is even possible?

    Cheers

Sounds like you need to change the Coordinate Reference System (CRS) used in the shapefile. With QGIS, you can add the vector layer, and then right-click the layer in the layer list, selecting "Save as..." and then you can set the CRS.
