This is a video of an interactive prototype for an explorative interactive sound installation.
The concept is based on the flocking of boids and the user’s interaction with it. The boids of one or more swarms flock around on a projected surface, searching their way as autonomous groups with different properties and behaviour.
With an input device, the user is able to influence the swarms and affect their behaviour. The main ability of the swarms is to create sound. This sound is controlled by the user.
He can "fill" the input device with his voice or other sounds, and feed this to the boids by pouring it on the surface.
When the user hits the boids with the device, the eaten sound is played back, influenced by different parameters, the boids hold themselves.
For example each swarm can represent different
waveforms that are multiplied with the sample and each boid can have differences in the applied frequency. Furthermore the boids’ tails represent the duration the sample is played. A short tail has only a short fadeout, a long one fades out slower.
The Installation is a explorative way of interaction with simple programmed cells which, thanks to the algorithms seem to have a live of their own in their projected ecosystem.
With the ability of feeding the own voice and sounds to the
swarms, the users can become part of the installation.
