In January 2011, artist Kylin O'Brien (kylinobrien.net) created a 9' diameter Tibetan Mandala out of LEGO.
In the great tradition of Tibetan Buddhist sand mandalas, this meticulous and time-consuming work of art was taken apart just after completion.
In the great tradition of LEGO it was transformed into a funky city by lots of people having fun!
This deconstruction of a consecrated universe represents the acceptance of material impermanence and celebrates the forces of change constantly at work in our universe.
This reconstruction of LEGO into a new world represents the importance of imaginative, transformative work and how when we embrace change and play simultaneously... we are at our best in the world.
The party was somewhat profound, but mostly it was super fun.
Many thanks to Chris Jordan for the timelapse setup (seej.net)!
And Marcel Botha of Overlap (theoverlap.org/2010/) for the LEGO!
