UPDATE 01/05/2012:
Our kickstarter campaign is completed, we are 200% successful! Production is underway, we have a lot of work ahead of us. If you are still interested in supporting this fully crowd-funded project, we are accepting donations on our website, c-themovie.com

Trailer for my film "c," a hard sci-fi action/drama shot the old fashioned way, without CGI or greenscreen.

Set in the distant future, "c" tells the story of First Lieutenant Malleck and her radical attempt to salvage reason during an interplanetary cold war.

Thanks! My brother is doing the original score, we've got a few other songs in the works.

I am obsessed with practical, in camera effects and this looks awesome. What camera did you shoot the spacecraft model with?
  • Derek Van Gorder plus 1 year ago
Everything so far has been shot on the Canon 5D Mk II.
  • Phillip Bastien 1 year ago
awesome!!! I've been studying practical effects from an old guidebook from the 80s and have always thought that shooting models on digital would be exceedingly difficult due the fact that high speed photography is used on models so that they have an appropriate sense of weight to their movements.

It's great (and beneficial as I want to use models in a short that I am working on) to learn that this is not necessarily the case.
  • Derek Van Gorder plus 1 year ago
Really cool, that must be a fun read. It's just been trial & error for me, very interesting experience-- for every shot in the trailer, there's hours of test footage.

In the past shooting miniatures with digital would have been difficult because of limited frame rates and light sensitivity, but over the years digital cameras have (technically) surpassed film in both these areas. I think it's just not done often because CGI has replaced miniatures in most cases.

I can't begin to describe how awe-inspiring this is. I can't wait to see more.
Is it possible to get the music somewhere?
  • Derek Van Gorder plus 1 year ago
Not yet, but I will definitely make sure the soundtrack is made available along with the film. Thanks!

Please do. The imagery was beautiful but I think the music put it over the top for me. Made the trailer feel precisely like the best sort of existential, contemplative Sci-fi.

Quick question, I've seen quite a few videos here on Vimeo (shot with 5ds/7ds) where either the frame rate (I think it's 30p or 24p that does it) or certain filters can be used to give the video a very 'filmic' quality.

Have you done that here because it looks very much like a video shot on a 5d/7d. Not that it's a bad thing but I'm just wondering if you had plans to use such a technique or filter at all.
  • Derek Van Gorder plus 11 months ago
    Thanks!

I shot on the 5D at 24fps. But in addition to frame rate, I think the "film look" is also determined by contrast, depth of field, grain, and other qualities.

I didn't push any particular characteristics that weren't there to begin with. My personal feeling is that the 5D Mk II has a unique look that is very different from both film and other digital cameras. I don't try to imitate film when shooting video, because if I wanted the film look, it would be easier to just shoot film.

This is so great looking. Dreamy, sad, YES, a female captain! I love this trailer; I can't wait to see the full-length film. And, yeah, I want the soundtrack already!

Dang almost 16,000 views! that is one of the highest views I have seen on vimeo, I would agree with Iain that Practical Effects are coming back. I think that the stripped down feeling of this is such an enjoyable aesthetic to this piece.
I can't wait to see more!

I'll be so excited to see this project finished. I wish I was in your place, making this film. Great idea, and great execution so far. Best of luck. I'll spread the word as much as I can.

Awesome project! I too love in-camera effects and stride to do as much as I can without special effects.

    I'm gonna explode if
    A.) This doesn't happen quick.
B.) I don't get my hands on that music ASAP.
  • Derek Van Gorder plus 2 months ago
A.) Well, this is only gonna happen if we can reach our goal on kickstarter!

    B.) See A.)

Rest assured I'm doing my best to prevent your explosion and make my film, but don't forget you can help in the effort by sharing our kickstarter link with friends!

I just backed this project on Kickstarter. If I had thousands of dollars to spare, I would donate it to this film. Everything about this trailer is great- cinematography, music, special effects, acting. True sci-fi films are practically extinct in Hollywood now, which is a real shame.
  • Derek Van Gorder plus 2 months ago
Thanks so much, Dustin! I feel the same. It's time for sci-fi to come back in a big way, I think people are ready for it.
  • Dustin Lee 2 months ago
The problem is that audiences hear sci-fi and expect something like a superhero movie or the Transformers films. That isn't sci-fi. There aren't enough films like Moon or Gattaca or even The Fountain, which are all modern genre classics in my opinion.

certain things about old school sci fi, I'm on the fence about, but this trailer is really cool. Love the shot of the ship and it's shadow.

Nice. Good luck on your campaign, will spread the word. Hope you reach your target
EDIT - actually I see you already have! Good luck making the film itself then. Will be looking out for it
