"Common across Turkish cities and towns is the sight of a basket or bucket lowered down on a rope from an apartment window or balcony, followed by a shouted request for bread, rice, baking powder or any other commodity sold in the local corner shop (bakkal ). The order will be shouted over to the shopkeeper or his apprentice, a neighbour's child playing in the street or even just any random passer-by. The money is taken from the basket, and shortly after they place both the merchandise and the remaining change in the improvised shopping basket that is then being pulled back up."
