SHINE is a collaborative film project produced by BIZNIK.com, an online networking community for micro business owners and solopreneurs. The project began on May 6, 2009 when 12 video crews and over 400 entrepreneurs gathered in Seattle’s largest film production studio to share why they work long hours, for low pay, facing great uncertainty.

The film combines compelling stories from the event, and interviews with academics, celebrated researchers (like Scott Shane author of Illusions of Entrepreneurship), and entrepreneurial superlatives (like Bruce Livingstone, founder of iStockphoto, acquired by Getty Images for $50M).

The result presents the larger story about entrepreneurship in an economy where 90 percent of all new jobs are created by small, entrepreneur-driven businesses.

View SHINE with an audience at a SHINE On event and discuss the themes with others who share the satisfaction of following your passion. The first SHINE On events are being held in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Boston: biznik.com/SHINE/Shine_on.

That depends what you mean by "entrepreneur," BR. We like to think of entrepreneurs as people like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, but the reality is far different. Most entrepreneurs are average people starting average businesses for one reason: they don't want to work for somebody else.

Great job, Dan! Keep up the good work on all fronts!

Don't forget your inspiring keynote during one of the filming of "Shine":

Thanks for this video. I found it inspiring with how things are going staying afloat and surviving on ramen!

Hi Darrell, yes thanks for shooting video of that speech - I still have it posted on my Biznik profile two years later. Hope you're doing great and shooting pretty.

    Miguel,
Trader Joe's ramen is my preferred choice :-)

Fantastic Dan. I'm seeing this just as I'm starting yet another adventure in entrepreneurialism. Bravo!

Thank you for this video. What can I say...I've lived it..I understand it...I love it.

Lynn, one of my goals in making this film was to create something that validates the experience of real entrepreneurs, rather than dangles the carrot that is so often held out by the mainstream media (which often equates VC funding with success). Glad it resonated for you.

Very very awesome documentary, Dan! Thanks for making this. I loved hearing the success and the failure stories, and seeing others who like me, hate working for someone else. And now...I'm the newest member of Biznik, as of a few seconds ago!

I love to hate being an entrepreneur. I loathe the business aspects, and money, and selling myself, but I absolutely love making films and creating. But I know that there are other people out there that absolutely love dealing with the raw business aspects (and who probably would hate trying to make a video). So what I plan to do is go to some entrepreneur meetups, and find someone who can run my business for me, leaving me to focus on doing what I do best.

Thank you Daniel. I'm guessing most entrepreneurs hate at least some part of their job. For me it's alway the accounting. Thank goodness some people like that, or my business would have failed a long time ago.
  • Daniel Bean plus 11 months ago
I guess hate is a strong word, I should have said it's not my favorite part. Actually I enjoy studying books on business, but I'm not as good about putting them into practice! But for sure, I definitely prefer owning my own business as opposed to working for someone else.

This was very inspiring to say the LEAST. I have always struggled with my starting journey of being an entrepreneur, and each day is a new journey. I really wish there was more of a collaborative community amongst the "new breed", and I seek to find a way to connect as believe we often feel alone like we are in our own bubbles floating to a similar pathway... I hope we can all come together very soon to not only help each other, but inspire each other to making the world a better place. (I think highly of the "new breed" if you couldn't tell...!!)

Totally with you, Chanelle. Here's to collaboration.

The film is somehow inspiring but the thing which is really making me feel uncomfortable is this the framing of most shots. It is too narrow, to close. I feel like I'm sitting on those people's faces. So the film has not enough breathing space. Was it made on purpose or somehow "just happened"?

It's intentional. We were going for an intimate vibe. Entrepreneurs put themselves in their business to a far larger degree than employees do, and we wanted to convey that reality. Which can be a little uncomfortable.

I am in the beginning of my journey as an entrepreneur and with that, I am trying to establish my reasons, my whys, and just get a grasp on my urge and my need to be an entrepreneur. This video has helped me understand and helped explain a lot of the feelings and emotions I have right now, a lot of which I didn't even know I had or that I couldn't put a finger on until now. I can't thank you enough for your great work, Dan! This is something that I will probably come back to many times in the future when the darkness grows too big and I can't remember why I have ventured away from the security of a j-o-b. I am thankful that you have provided such a helpful and useful resource.
