Created by a team of nine students and two faculty members over the course of the January term, the DART Lumen·arium is a multimedia art installation that explores the intersections of natural and artificial light. Situated in Hampshire's Cole Science Bioshelter, the Lumen·arium bridges botany with installation art. Ten pieces created in a range of materials—from plexiglass and mirror to paint and fabric—come together to address not only the aesthetic concerns of the space but also its botanical function.
The Lumen·arium is a space replete with interpreted light, movement, and ideas of space. It is a “light guide” that leads from the optical insights of Galileo to the technology of tomorrow. Some light we see and some we feel. The Lumen·arium seeks to make light evident in subtle, dramatic and surprising ways.
