Shot in South Dakota in early February 2011, with most nights sub zero with -25 F wind chill. Used Dynamic Perception Stage Zero dolly and Milapse mount on most of the shots.

The Stage Zero Dolly worked great in the sub zero temps.

At :55 is an owl, and at 1:33 are Racoons moving near the attic of house.

Canon 60D and T2i
Tokina 11-16 - Great Lens
Tamron 17-50

Shot in RAW format, most shots were 20 seconds exposure F2.8 with 1 second interval between shots, for about 300 frames or so (several hours). There were a few 30 second and one 15 second exposures. ISO 1600

Wow. Really amazing shots here Randy! Thanks for sharing. You've probably given the system it's most brutal cold weather testing that we're aware of!
  • John Myrstad 1 year ago
I may give it even more brutality any day ;)
  • Randy Halverson plus 1 year ago
Thanks, I kept the MX2 and battery in a small cooler with handwarmers, so that helped. On the clip with the old swingset and house, the wind gusted to 25mph the whole time, I didn't notice any jitter in the stills.
  • Dustin Farrell plus 1 year ago
The swingset shot was bad ass! All it needed to be absolutely perfect was another 2 or 3 feet of rise to clear the swingset and a nice ease to a stop.

I've seen Jay's stuff ease in and out. Does ur DP dolly controller have that feature?
  • Randy Halverson plus 1 year ago
Thanks Dustin, It does have ramp in and out, but I haven't tried it yet. I was going to have it start out higher with a 2nd tripod, but with the wind thought it might blow over. :)
  • Great Work! :)

Battery power for 60D? I am using 7D, @ 0ºF 4.5 hour Canon battery, but need more.
  • Randy Halverson plus 1 year ago
I use a 3rd party grip from Amazon, I would swap out the batteries between each 2+ hour run. I also put a hand warmer on the bottom of the grip.

i like it! some really nice windless nights. perfect for timelapsing. i can't help but feel like I"M freezing my ass off whenever i watch it. i don't know how you managed to do it, but good job.
  • Randy Halverson plus 1 year ago
Thanks, I did freeze it off setting it up, luckily I didn't have to stay outside while it ran.
  •
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
Liked it. I think the shots with the old house were really cool. Looked like there was something living up in the roof of the place on the swing set shot.
  • Randy Halverson plus 1 year ago
Thanks, I had the 2nd camera set up on the barn, walked past there and never noticed a thing. I think it was Racoons going in and out. At the end of the shot, one goes up the left side of the porch, it saw me coming to pick up the cameras.

More than a few animals in this one. If you watch closely, you'll see an owl taking a short break up on top of a telephone pole as well. Even in the dead of winter, things aren't as lifeless as us slickers might assume.

A 3rd party one, I think from linkdelight

  •
  • awesome loved this. did you put shots through much post processing?
  • Randy Halverson plus 1 year ago
I shot it in RAW, had to adjust white balance, tone down a few clips that were overexposed from snow/moon combo. Resized and imported into Premiere.
  • cheers, always good to get as much detail when you are starting out, so above is helpful.

Randy: How many inches per minute did you use for travel on the dolly, and average frames. The moves look nice and smooth.
  • Randy Halverson plus 1 year ago
It really varied on the angle I used, from .48 to 1.21. The .48 came up short and 1.21 on the swingset shot maybe a little too fast. It was my first time using it, and tried to get the full run in 2-3 hours.
  • Craig Carson plus 1 year ago
Thanks so much Randy. I am trying to work out some ratios.
  • MILapse 1 year ago
I'm still drumming the tooth method. Try it, you'll like it. =) Super close objects 1/2 tooth per shot far objects 1 tooth+. Adjust your speed or distance per shot on the fly after starting. This compensates for your load/angle/etc. ;)
  • MILapse 1 year ago
BTW I thought the swingset shot was dead on!
  • Randy Halverson plus 1 year ago
I think that method is the best too, thanks for your help Jay when I was getting the hang of it. The swing set shot was about 1 tooth per shot when I checked it.
  • Craig Carson plus 1 year ago
    Thanks as usual Jay!
  • Christoph Malin plus 10 months ago
recently tested .12; .24 and .36i and it was very slow with wide angle. so in between .48 and 1.21 sounds good. very nice video randy, congrats!
  • Daniel Dragon Films plus 9 months ago
I know I'm a bit late to this party, but I did some 10 second exposures w/ 12 second interval on the stage zero dolly recently, and I found that 1.24 inches/minute gave me a nice ~370 shots while traveling the 6ft length of the dolly, with objects in the foreground about 2 ft away.

  • Nathan plus 1 year ago
Very nice indeed. Just curious, were the black things at 1:30 on the house bats?
  • Randy Halverson plus 1 year ago
I think they are racoons, must be living in the attic.
  • Daniel Dragon Films plus 9 months ago
You would be amazed at racoons, we had a family of them living in a hollow tree only 30 ft from our front door, and we never knew it for years.

Great imagery and the soundtrack was awesome. Dynamic Perception is here in Houston, and I may pay them a visit, though a slider rig would have limited use on a big 2/3" ENG camera. I like the idea of a motor-pull, timelapse or no time lapse. Thanks for posting the set-up photos as well.
  • Randy Halverson plus 11 months ago
Thanks, it is a great rig for the price, it is built more for timelapse though. I believe they will hold up to 15 pounds.
  • Patrick McLoad pro 11 months ago
Decided it would make more sense for me to buy a DSLR for timelapse rather than try to adapt a relatively heavy 2/3" EFP camera to lightweight sliders. There's also the issue of shooting with prime lenses, which I can't do without an adapter.

Planned or not, I thought it cool to see whateveritis on a slider coming out of the house at 50 secs!

Now it's videos like this that make you really appreciate being ALiiiiVE.. It leaves me breathless every time I watch it.. Ooops I think i gave away I might have watched it too many times now.. However I don't think I will ever tire of it ; ) Makes me want to come to Dakota and to experience it for myself.

Did you stay in the old house whilst shooting the timelapse and how did you keep warm?
  • Randy Halverson plus 11 months ago
thanks, I just set it up, left it for 2-3 hours, then went back for it. Luckily, I didn't have to watch it the whole time!
  •
  • Silver Fox Pictures 11 months ago
So roughly how much time did your first clip on the video take??? I know you used a stage Zero Dolly for the movement part, but what's the basic set up for doing timelapses..?? I'm currently armed with a 5D mkII.. Will be getting some aspherical lenses like the ones you used for this video and maybe some primes soon.
  • Randy Halverson plus 11 months ago
It ran for about 3 hours. Lots of info at timescapes.org forum for setting up timelapse.
