This is the story of a miraculous breed of pigs introduced to the Auckland Islands south of New Zealand as an emergency food source for shipwrecked sailors 200 years ago. Because of the isolation, the pigs were found to be free of disease and are now being used in a ground-breaking new treatment for type 1 diabetes, xenotransplantation, in which the pig's insulin-producing islet cells are transplanted into the person in a capsule that is a marvel of biotechnology.
