Larry Virgil Nesland
1942-2008
Larry Virgil Nesland died on Thursday, October 9 at age 66 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He died at his home in McMinnville, Oregon.
Larry was born in Mobridge, South Dakota on June 29, 1942 to Virgil and Thelma Nesland.
On August 1, 1964 he married his lovely bride, Rita Greeno (Nesland). This past August 1, they celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. Larry graduated from Northern State Teacher’s College in 1965. In 1964, he embarked on a mathematics teaching career that spanned multiple generations of students and their parents over the course of 44 years. In July 2008, he retired as head of Chemeketa’s math lab in McMinnville. Larry retired from full-time teaching in 1997 after 28 years at McMinnville High School. He was also the Supervisor of Student Teachers at Linfield College in the early 1980’s. Larry loved impacting students’ lives with his passion for teaching, life-long learning and math. He also devoted many years to coaching golf, tennis, basketball, and track & field. Larry was a devoted church member and elder at Bethel Baptist Church and, more recently a member at McCabe Church in McMinnville. He was a friendly but fierce competitor on the golf course with his friends and family.
Larry was a loyal and faithful husband, father, grandfather and friend to all he knew. For him, there was no secret to success; it came after much practice and hard work. He was well respected and liked by all that knew him; Larry will be sadly missed in our lives.
He is survived by his wife Rita and his two sons, Brett (38) and Chad (33), his brothers Jim and Bob, 2 granddaughters (Dominique & Laighton), and his mother Thelma (90).
A Celebration of his life will be held at Church on the Hill at 1:30 p.m. on October 25, 2008 with Rev. Margaret Golden presiding. Memorial contributions may be made to McCabe United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Macy & Son.
