This is a quick review of the Casio EX-FH20, which is primarily a 9-megapixel digital still camera that also shoots 720p video as a secondary feature. Oh, and it captures a bajillion frames per second high-speed video too, which lets you produce ultra slo-mo shots, albeit at significantly reduced resolutions.

That was great, I've been thinking about one of those for a while as I love the idea of a high speed facility, but can I live with the low resolution? Not sure.

Yea, it's pretty low-res. As with all gimmicks (including software effects plugins), I always feel that if you don't already have a project/shot in mind that you'd use it on, don't do it.

Unless the money comes out of your toy budget, then: by all means! Very fun. I'm cutting together a reel of just high-speed stuff... stay tuned!

Eric, another great video as always. I like the examples used.

For some reason, I want to see more light on the left side of your face (stage left). I don't think your diffusive light on that side of your face is keeping up your light tree on the other side.

I agree. I lost the specular eye-lights in this one too. The solution is to bring the both lights (key, fill) around to the front more and bring the fill a little closer. (Oh, and I forgot to turn on one of my floor lights... grrrr... that's what I get for taking too long of a break from making vids.)

So that's one thing I learned this time. Here's another: This was supposed to be a quick project. Lesson: There are no quick projects!

I will agree with you, there are no quick projects. I like using a 2x factor. Take the time you think it takes and then double it.

Still a great video, please keep them coming. I hope you can make $ off these somehow.

nice review. But I have a question. I'm currently looking in spending 800 bucks on the Sanyo Xacti HD 1010 is it worth the money or should I spend the money on another HD camera. What I'm looking for is Super Slo Mo Shots. And 1080i video recording and playback. O and portability. Because I take my camera everywhere. Something that is still point and shoot for videoblogs. But at the same time that it has just the right fetures to produce a proffesional video. Like mic input and stuff like that. I would really apreciate you sencire opinion thanks.

I know the camera you are talking about, but haven't played with it yet.

My guess is that the video performance is superior to the Casio FH20, since it is a dedicated video camera and saves 1080i using H.264. The 300fps mode is 448 x 336, which is about the same as the Casio's 480x360@210fps.

This video of yours is as slick as others, so my question is about all of these. I know you shoot with SR7, it is a 60i camera, when deinterlaced you get 30p. Vimeo, on the other hand, prefers 24fps and re-encodes every other video with higher frame rate into jerky 24p. Your videos are smooth, what is your secret? What do you use to re-encode 60i/30p into 24p?

Excellent question: My workflow is to edit 1080i60 all the way to the end, then switch to 720p24 and do my final color, tweaks, deinterlacing, etc. I just use Vegas, using the "Blend" option for deinterlacing (combining the two fields). Now, when I render, I know what my video is going to look like BEFORE I upload to Vimeo (indeed, I know what it's going to look like before I render!).

Not saying this is the only "right" workflow, but it sure is what works for me!

Also, I have another advantage: low-motion, well-lit video with a very simple background is very easy to compress!

I have never used the big stuff to edit my stuff. But I love that this camera is so easy to use and I can pretty much just up load it to my you tube or a friends page.

As an all around shooter I just love the look and feel of the camera. After talking to a few video guys there feeling is that its great for a small camera and it is not a high def camcorder. It has a lot of bells and wistles making it a feature rich camera at a price that wont break the bank.
