Always a dream to hike this trail but have not been able to thank you for this wonderful film

I'm with cmerry. I've always wanted to hike the AT. Haven't been able to yet. Hope to do so someday.

Nice work. Have you ever seen the movie 'Last of the Mohicans'? Your video would be epic if you put music from it's soundtrack with it. Check it out.

I've always wanted to see a timelapse of a thru-hike on one of America's long distance trails. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome. My brother and I just did the Everest Base Camp trek (vimeo.com/20556634 ) and wish we had done a time lapse like this. Maybe Appalachian Trail should be next for us!

Awesome video! Though, as a 2010 MEGA I must say that your video makes the trail look like a nice little jaunt in the park, ha! So, maybe a little bit of false advertising but a very cool video that made me smile :-) THANKS
  • Jeff Walden 11 months ago
But that's all it was, wasn't it? I mean, those rocky trails in Pennsylvania sure felt like just a walk in the park, right? :-D (Although, speaking as a 2008 MEGA [southbound for life!], Pennsylvania was neither as tedious nor as difficult as everyone heading north made it out to be.)

Is that the Moose Mountain privy in your profile picture, I think?
  • Rebecca Prendergast 10 months ago
Oh I don't know, I hated Pennsylvania. It is the most pointless state in my opinion, all rocks, next to no good views. Plus I had a package get sent to a place no longer in business & church mice cost me about $50 in gear and food at the Delaware Water Gap; kinda one of "those" states. Luckily I had some pretty awesome trail magic by some people I met in that state that made it more bearable. And yes, I believe that is Moose Mountain privy, I just remember it being near Dartmouth, made by the Dartmouth students. I couldn't help but get a candid shot on the open air throne!

What a great idea! We sure live in a beautiful country. Thanks!

Loved it. I can try and reference a few frames:

Bear Mtn Bridge, NY is at 2:39
Mt Greylock, MA is at 2:46
Mt Washington, NH at 3:34 ?
  • Kevin Gallagher plus 11 months ago
    Close!
That's the bridge coming into Palmerton, PA and the monument at 2:46 is the NJ highpoint.

    Thanks for watching!

This idea occurred to me recently and I was really hoping someone would do exactly this. Well done! Hopefully I will stumble upon a similar thing done with the Mississippi River.

Kevin this is a terriic video! Nicely done!

At 0:41, was that an animal (a wolf?!) peering at you on the left side of the trail or treebark arrayed into a menacing pattern?

At what point in this did you hit the area around my hometown of Roanoke, Va., which are the only segments of the AT that I've hiked. Perhaps you recall The Priest, the Hanging Rock, the mountain meadow, and the offshoot to your right for the Horsehoe Crab Falls?

What was up with the snowstorms early on? Were those the mountain emanations of the dual Snowmaggedon and Snowpocalypse storms that hit close to the shores in February 2010?

Lovely video. I may buy a couple of copies for my family.
  • Kevin Gallagher plus 11 months ago
    Hey Bill,

Unfortunately, the only critters in the film are hikers. Most animals just run away in the backcountry.

The bridge you see at 2:00 crosses over the Tye River which is right near between all those lovely spots near the Priest and Three-Ridges. And snow is the pits but it looks so good...

    Thanks for watching!

Oh and why did you decide to walk north? It seemed desolate at the start and then boom! green began appearing.
  • Kevin Gallagher plus 11 months ago
As the first AT thru-hiker Earl Shaffer put it, walking north lets you walk with spring, "the woods are at their finest, with the budding and leafing of trees, the blooming of flowers, the full flowing streams and waterfalls, the rainswept blue of the sky..."
  • Jeff Walden 11 months ago
Most people walk north, one reason being that apparently some dread the (not-hard) deadline of winter less than they dread the (fuzzy but hard) deadline of Katahdin closing. You see and hike with more people, trail culture is much more active in the south in springtime than in fall as a result, and of course some will prefer fresh springtime to colorful fall.

A lot of the people who walk south do it because that's the way that fits their schedules: a lot are people just graduating from college, say. But southbounding has its advantages depending what you value: fewer people and more solitude (although you're still around a decent number of others heading south), fewer ticks, no deadline if you're fine hiking in cold to wintry weather, and so on. Every impression I've gotten, however, is that the two directions are *very* different hikes, and one way might be best for one person and the other best for another.

I found your video through a Wired news link. wired.com/playbook/2011/03/video-appalachian-trail/
I was looking at your photo, thinking that guy looks familiar. Then I realized who it was... we had some classes together at VCU and worked on a few projects afterward in Richmond.
    Cool video!

Anyone see Hot Springs NC? there's a walk bridge over a road going into town. Doesn't the AT cross the BR Parkway? Where? Nice video, you are a champion for completing the trip and documenting so much of it in this way.

Wonderful. Where would we learn some technical details? Camera, mount, batteries? How did you manage it all for such a long time and under such conditions? What was the frame acquisition time interval? Please. Inquiring minds want to know.

hmm... sure would like to hike this trail. I actually thought about making something visually similar while I was walking the St. James' Way for 3 months - but endet up with a totally different result:

But then again: different visuals for different walks (and different experiences)
