After spending time in the cities during my first visit to Siberia, this time I visited the local Khanty people, indigenous people of Ugra region of Siberia, located very far away from the cities, accessible only via sled.

This is a short film taken from a half hour that incorporates this footage.

All but two shots are done with the EX3 without 35mm adaptor. Mainly due to time constraints.

Do you like how it came out without the adaptor?
It is a lot different than your usual look. I like it because it looks like you got some shots in that you couldn't get with the time it takes to use an adaptor. On the other hand it does lack the depth and some of the richness. I've been trying to figure a lot out about when or not to use an adaptor, and it is SUCH a gut wrenching decision because I love using adaptors all of the time.

when you are shooting on the back of the snowmobile you can see a small amount of the effects of the rolling shutter. damn that cmos
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 years ago
hi paul, you really shouldn't blame rolling shutter for every glitch you see! it was smooth cam in fcp that caused it.

I proudly call myself a Bloom fanboy, yet the snowmobile cut looks so like a guy in front of a green screen with people shaking his sled. I know it's not but couldn't help but point it out. As usual your penchant for capturing the emotion of the moment is truly something that is uniquely yours.

To say this is breathtaking, seems cliche' and hackneyed.

I have had the honor of "visiting" this particular area of Siberia. I did not really know why there has always been something in me, pulling me back to this land I found so enchanting. Your film has made it clear.

I would love to download the full version. How does one go about that? (I am new here, so please excuse my ignorance)

Very beautiful photography and I enjoyd it visually very much!
About the content: I'm sad to say, but the film is far more beautiful and cute than the reality, which can be also the point or purpuse of course.

Just for information: Minority nations are not living too good in Russia (as it's true for the minorities in any empire) and especially in Hanty mansijsk: the nature is getting more and more polluted, their traditional life-style is nearly abandoned. Local people I've met say that in 50 years when all the oil is pulled out, there would be no clean nature anymore and no place where one could capture running deers... People have two choices: drink themselves to death (that they do a lot) or adapt to urban life.

Great film, nice music, but the two do not match. The music is too idyllic, while the life you are showing is hard. I would rather hear the actual sounds of the people and their animals.
