The city of Los Angeles is very hard to approach as a filmmaker. One really has to have an "in" to find work, as there are millions of me competing for the same opportunities.
So it really was a fluke when Hai called me after I'd scoured Craigslist for weeks looking for any kind of filmmaking work. His idea was simple, he wanted to create a fake movie trailer that his girlfriend would see as she patiently waited for her fashionably late date. At the end, he would be revealed and ask for her hand in marriage. The catch, however, was that we had from 4:00 PM to 8:00PM to conceptualize and shoot the entire thing. So I grabbed the cat and dog masks from the Bearded Lady video shoot, wrote a quick outline from 4-5 when Hai was getting in costume, and filmed the whole thing between 5-8 all over downtown Los Angeles.
Needless to say, she said yes and an exasperated Hai came up to me outside the theater and shook my hand, stammering, "You Brandon, are a true friend." Could I have asked for a better first LA gig?
