This is the most successful of the "studies" which I chose to display in an exhibition along with the machine that performs the 'removal'. (Installation photos available on my website).

"Removal Studies" are a series of videos made using time-lapse photography. These videos are sleep studies that observe the reaction of the unconscious body to the negative stimulus of removing the covers.
The covers are removed by a machine that attaches to the bed and tugs a slight amount off in increments throughout the night. By studying the sleeping body, my aim was to capture something very honest and very animal about human beings. I was interested in this gesture of removal -- and subsequently, exposure -- and how it could function as a larger metaphor.

Technical Note: The imagery is generated by a DSLR camera taking 30 second exposures every two minutes. It was a full moon that night, so it is very bright and seems like day light. Don't be fooled! The footage is truthful.

I think i would wake up, have a fight with the "machine" then go to the den and watch tv.

This is wonderful. I'd like to see more of the movement that is lost in between the exposures though. Maybe if it was done with a webcam (Creative makes a 1600x1200 webcam) that captured time adaptively (e.g.: more frames for moments with more movement) you could achieve that effect.

I really like these projects that involve very simple machines.

Thanks Kylie. Yeah that's something I talked with people about in critique. I suppose the reason I defaulted to photography was so that I could control colors and exposures a bit better, hence how bright it is.
If I can muster the energy to torture myself that much again i'll certainly try other methods! Thanks for the suggestion

Webcams generally play pretty well with low-light conditions, but maybe not all the way down to moonlight :) A couple years ago I tried some things like this vimeo.com/172160 So if you'd like to try something that is more adaptive some time, I'd be glad to help.

I appreciate the description of the study. That was incredibly interesting.
