My wife and I decided to have a picnic today at St. Edward State Park in Kirkland, Washington. We had never visited this park and thought it might be a great place to have a picnic. When we arrived, we were surprised to find that the Skandia 2010 Midsommarfest was in full swing! We set up near the maypole ring in hopes that we might see the raising of the maple pole. We did! Along with lots of folk dancing and great Scandinavian live music.
In June 1959, the Seattle Skandia Folkdance Society inaugurated this event. Founded by Gordon Ekvall Tracie, he aimed to re-create a traditional Scandinavian celebration of the summer solstice in as authentic a manner as possible, complete with the ancient pole-raising ceremony and outdoor dancing, as practiced in Sweden for centuries.
