It was inspired, amoungst other things, by a film I projected in a cinema (i think it was by Jack smith) where the instructions on the film tin told the projectionist at what point in the film you had to turn a radio on in the auditorium to complement the sound track.

After i shot the titles and i was about to develop them I wound the film up and pushed the middle of the roll out to make a long cone with the sprocket holes on the outside (if that makes sense). Then i turned the light on a few seconds to expose through the sprocket holes, before winding the film onto the spiral or stuffing it into a bucket (i cant remember which). There was no testing involved just guesswork, confidence and luck.
