I don't think this specific case is like vein or anything - yes its cosmetic - but technically one could say the same about brushing your teeth. All you're doing is trying to make sure you have a healthy smile and there's definitely nothing wrong with that. :)

Now, obviously going out and getting a facelift and a nose job, thats a completely different situation, but that's another topic.

Also, I would do it, in fact I need braces, so I've been considering it. The only problem is, I'm just not sure if I can afford it, I know they can be pretty pricy.

Anyways there are my two cents. And btw I think this is a really cool way to get to interact ;-)
