No nature footage this time. This short explores the idea of knowing our own future.

Stars my daughter Tara, her best friend and her brother Zac. Tara also did the narration.

The usual Canon XHA1 with Letus Ultimate rig. Most of this was shot with a Nikon 55mm f2.8 macro lens with some others shot with a Nikon 50mm f1.8

Lighting was done with regular worklight fluorescents (3 doubles strung together, 55k) and one of those cheap dome light holders and a screw in fluorescent bulb. I wouldn’t recommend this for anything professional because I experienced some phasing but it was okay for something at this level.

Dolly shots were done with a typical "T" dolly and PVC pipe for the track. I got this setup years ago from Promax and it still works great.

Some of these shots were inspired by Solaris (Soderbergh’s version), which I regard as one of the most beautifully shot films ever.

Enjoy.

  • Hi;i always watch your videos.you always had a cinematic look...but in this video some thing missing..
maybe because the disolve...i dont know...keep tight
    look on it.
    Thanks.

Thank you. Jayakhanthan, I have gotten a bunch of comments on the lap dissolves so I removed them to see how it would feel and I think it works better. The file has since been replaced. Thanks for the feedback.

Your short is gorgeous. Love the ideas you explore.

(Oh, and I totally agree about Solaris--one of my favorite films.)

    Nice work.

Tara looks different. She looks somehow older than the last piece I remember her in. Is the the makeup? I still maintain she has a great 'actors' face and she can do these 'looks' to camera that many an actor I know would kill to be able to do! Nice piece Steven, I know the feel you're going for there and I love that, almost meditative' feel. If I were playing with that edit I would slow things down even more, the music, definitely the narration, and then leave the shots lingering until they're almost too long. (although far be it from me to make suggestions to one of my Vimeo heroes!!)
    Cheers
    Avey

PS Have you seen MacGregor's stuff on Vimeo? VERY Solaris and very nice too.

PPS, why the XH A1 nowadays and not the EX1?

PPPS the eye lash shot is stunning
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
    Thanks for the comments Wayne.

I am aware of MacGregor's films. I like them very much.

    I can't afford the EX1. If I could, I'd buy one.
  • Wayne Avanson plus 1 year ago
Well now I;m confused, (doesn't take much) I always thought you had an EX1.
Do apologise, matey. I can't afford one either…

I love the sense of adventure in your project. However, I have to agree with the previous comment. It left me reaching for a conclusion or even yet a little "fragmented". The experimentation seemed very successful, I give you high marks for the shots. I think the video needs emotional triggers, I couldn't quite explain it so I found something that reflects it; "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_trauma". Could be a fun separate project simply trying to achieve it.

    Keep it up, great work.
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
Thanks Fred but I must confess, I don't understand what you are saying in your last sentence (okay, second to last sentence :)

Also, keep in mind that all of this is a dream and it is fragmented thinking. She is detached from any emotional involvement because she is not really there during these mentioned events. Had I put her right there in reality, it would have been a completely different film. The intention of this short was to get the viewer thinking, not provide answers.

I updated my response. Sorry for the confusion.

Some literary and film immersion can help--you can roll up to the screen again in less than a week's time and get the different perspective. Try the Russian classics, e.g., The Death of Ivan Ilych, or some Lermentov. (And certainly, Bergman films, of which this is highly reminiscent...has "shades," if you will, of Sven Nykvist going on.) When the cultural masters insist upon a firm foundation from a properly constructed liberal arts education, it saves those pointless "reinventing the wheel" efforts...each can thus finally get the next edition of the cart moving on down the road. Then one day, more of us just turn a key, and vroom vroom--off and running! (Hmm, think I'll change my stage name to Buck Rogers, now that I think of it....)

Beautifully crafted, Steven. Fragments, indeed! LOVE it.

Steven, which colour preset are you using in this film? What would custom preset would you advice me to use for weddings? I got my xha1 last week. Regards, Gurmeet.
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
I'm using a preset called EOSPhoto, available from DVInfo here: dvinfo.net/conf/canon-xh-series-hdv-camcorders/126811-xh-custom-presets-download-library-copy.html (it's preset #16).

Having said that, however, I've done some pretty heavy color grading on this film so it does not resemble the original raw footage at all.

I think for general shooting, you could use this preset because it's pretty low in saturation and has some nice contrast. You can boost the color in post if you need to.

My best advice would be to try a bunch of presets yourself before the wedding and make your own decision. This is definitely a subjective choice.

I just uploaded the final version of this film. I moved away from the blue tint because it was making the skin purple and I don’t really want to mess around with it for days trying to preserve the skin tones while keeping the cooler feel. The way it is now is how I like it even though some of the skin has various pigments, but there’s a feeling of it being complete. I also replaced some shots that were not working for me.
  • Wayne Avanson plus 1 year ago
I've been messing with a similar thing for PEARL where the grading messes up the skin tones. Sure is tricky to get right!

What are your views of the sony z1/z7 colours compared to what can can do?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
I have never used these cameras so I can only comment on what I've seen of others online. Sony, in general, usually cranks the color way up in their consumer and prosumer cameras. I prefer to do this in post because high color values in-camera can cause a lot of noise.

On the other hand, Sony cameras are known for their relatively low noise so I'm not sure what else to tell you.

There are hundreds of factors to consider when comparing or choosing cameras and nothing beats the experience of shooting with them. Let your eyes make the decision for you.

Just one thing; why are the girls laughin at the moment she is talking about preventing a friends carcrash :p
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
The car crash is a future event. This scene is demonstrating the bond they share as best friends. This is quite deliberate in terms of the gestures. May not work for you, though.

You've inspired me so much that I just spent about $4,000 worth of equipment, lol. I bought the Letus Extreme starter bundle (crediting "Steven Dempsey" in case they pay you) and also go a bunch of lenses. All Canon though.

One of these days, I'd love to make a video about your work... but if I do, you'll get slammed with all my viewers on YouTube. Would you mind? I've got over 167,000 subcribers.

    hi steven,

    great work, as allways, congrats.

one thing I want to ask: letus extereme has f/5.6 and 1/125 limit. was this the reason for you to get ultimate ? I m planning to buy XHA1 and letus extreme for economical reasons. will it affect me ? do we need some sort of "low light" in order to work with f/5.6 and 1/125 max. ? i.e

    thanks.
    alkım.
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
It was one of the reasons, Alkim. The other reason is that the picture is much cleaner in general. It's so pristine, in fact, that sometimes I forget it came from an adapter. Even within the limits, the Extreme displays ground glass artifacts when shooting the sky, for instance. The other reason was simply the edge to edge sharpness. The Ultimate cannot be beat when it comes to a great picture.

    Need some advise.
I have to buy a camera soon and I was wondering if you would still recommend the xh-a1.

I was looking at the jvc gyhd200 also but heard it has a lot of capture problems in FCP.

I would like an sony ex-1 but don't have that kind of cash.
