I was invited to speak at European Television & Media Management Academy in Strasbourg, France. I spoke about Social Media, Crowdfunding, email campaigns, merchandise, fans, audience databases. My presentation is all about how the filmmaker can use more and more tools to get closer to the audience cutting out the expensive middle man. What do you think?

Thank you so much for posting this presentation, Thomas. There are so many tools out there, it's a bit overwhelming, to say the least. Orly Ravid posted a great article on Ted Hope's blog today discussing distribution options which I never heard of. Is it possible that we now have too many options, which might paralyze us? Not sure...

  • Thomas Mai 10 months ago
Dear Christopher, it can indeed be overwhelming with so many options, and yes it will keep increasing. But the positive news is that you are finally in charge of the life of your own film. Too many choices is a good thing, in my opinion. Thomas

Definitely positive overall, Thomas - agreed, though, when one is on his/her own at the start, it's very, very fatiguing. Just for fun, have you heard of the "Paradox of Choice"? xrl.in/8t8b
  • Thomas Mai 10 months ago
Dear Christopher, I think the most scary element for everyone today is that they can no longer blame anyone else for their lack of success. In the old days it was so easy to blame the poster, marketing, distributor, sales agent, script, actors, editor etc. Now we are finally in charge and that can be very overwhelming. I still think this is the best time ever to be a filmmaker. Thomas

    Agreed!

Thank you Thomas for sharing all this knowledge. For us young filmmakers in central america there's a lot to learn and study about this contemporary distribution options!! It's been a great help!

Hey Marcos, you are more than welcome. Good luck with everything. Thomas

It's a shame that most of the online indie distribution is not available for our region! It's like if the gatekeepers model still affects us! We'll see what we can do!
  • Thomas Mai 10 months ago
Hey Marcos. Good point. But dont forget that while you are still tied up in your own region, you still have the rest of the world to cater to with all the new tools. It is truly a Global Village and you can connect with your fans everywhere. Thomas
