Kesi lost her left hand, probably when she was clinging to her mother the moment she was slaughtered to death. Most likely it was an accident that they cut of Kesis left hand, while normally they want to sell the baby later.

Kesi is now in the hands of the most dedicated people to try to save the orangutans : the people of Nyaru Menteng, the largest rescue centre for orangutans in the world, near the town of Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan.
