31. Paul Pierce Sit-Down Interview
Check out my blog for more information and pictures: tomguilmette.com/wp/my-blog/archives/907
My website is located at tomguilmette.com

I have added the actual feature that aired on TNT just in case you missed it to my blog: tomguilmette.com/wp/my-blog/archives/950 (Footage courtesy of TNT Sports)

I was hired as a lighting director and a director of photography by Turner to set up and shoot a sit-down interview with John Thompson Jr. and Paul Pierce.

Dave and I picked up two Sony F900 HDCAMs, one Panasonic 900 DVCPRO HD, an Arri light kit, HD monitors, tripods, and tape stock from Rule Broadcast. I also brought some of my own gear.

We drove to Healthpoint athletic complex (practice and training facility for the Boston Celtics) and met up with another camera guy, Chris and the sound guy, Bill.

I set up my Sony EX1 with the Letus Extreme in the back of the "Hall of Fame" room at Healthpoint to capture a time lapse of our entire day. 9:30am to 3pm.

This sit-down interview is scheduled to air on October 28th during the one hour pre-game show before the Cavs/Celtics game at 7pm EST.

TRT: 5 minutes 48 seconds
Size: 131.3MB
Format: Quicktime H264 720p HD

It always made me wonder how those interview shots get set up? Watching them on TV we just take them for granted. Seeing the crew setting up the scene and the commentary makes this all the more interesting. Thanks Tom :)

Hey you didn’t leave that room like you found it… in the beginning there were two round tables and you ended up with tree round tables. Lol… good job I enjoyed this very much… thanks… Keep up the good work.

What were your timelapse settings in the EX for this? I like your motion blur. Did you use 16fps? Cool stuff!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 1 year ago

Tom this is a really well put together video. Even something as simple as this one-shot narrative is extremely interesting to watch. At least I know it is for someone techie like me who REALLY enjoys knowing about behind the scenes work and how things were set up.

Thank you for sharing all of this knowledge and information!

That was great Tom. It really shows how much goes on in the background for setting up a shoot. I'm a fan of your work. Your other videos are great.

Really cool tutorial. I have two questions.
    1. When making the tape change on the DVCPro HD were you outputing to another source so you could continue to capture or was that camera effectively down while that was going on?

    2. Do you ever get request/requirements to create interesting lighting conditions? if so can you point me to any examples?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 1 year ago
we stopped the interview and i made the change. it only took about ten seconds to do. the other hdcams kept recording. all three cameras had jam-sync timecode (a video cable feeding time code from one primary camera to the two other secondary cameras).

yea. i have had clients ask me to use fog machines to add a "dramatic look". like red lit smoke behind a boxer just before he hits the ring... or blue fog rising out of a goalie's hockey mask. Too many other examples to name off here!

    Very good job bro!

Well ... i think they are not seating very nice. You shoud use a small table to hide their legs. They just look like they will have sometning private behind a scene after shooting. You know. It is just not gantle mans, elegant look.

Really enjoy watching this, first time I have seen this kind of work, but I am afriad after seeing I was asuming at least some real footage if interview, that would have been really good.

Is it possibble for you to little footage?

    Thanks,
    Kaushik

Hey Tom. Nice video. Would've been great to see the actual interview cut at the end of the video. Sorry bout that Found it in the comments :)
  •
  • Hey Tom this video was very detailed and informative which is very helpful to many of us on Vimeo. I know you mentioned the Field Producer "Matt" from Turner... I've had the pleasure of working with TBS to some degree while as a Prop Master for Tyler Perry Studios for his television show here in my hometown of Atlanta. I really enjoy your artistic and informative videos... Thank you!!!

    Awesome video, Tom.

How come you chose to use a dimmer to get the keys' brightness matched opposed to a multi-bulb fixture like a Barger Baglight or Kino Flo? Do you ever find issues with color temperatures not matching when using dimmers?

I see the bottoms of your keys' softboxes are flagged. Is that so it doesn't hit the back of the other person's head? Do you ever double up lights like that (using a single light to key one person and backlight the other person)?

What did you guys use to feed the audio to all the cameras?

Thanks for posting. Make more of these! Your Fenway videos are great, too.
