An adaptive reuse proposal for the DEP sludge storage facility in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, With architect Meta Brunzema and community visitors. This vision for a multipurpose neighborhood center for recreation, the arts, history and environmental studies could have been realized in this 18,000 square foot structure. Instead, it was opposed by the conservative and influential Newtown Creek Monitoring Committee (NCMC). Though the effort to save the tank took place over 10 years ago, the tank still stands, it's costly demolition deferred, due to the prevailing economy. So a tank conversion may still be a possibility, depending on activist interest. Contact information: keithgvp@aol.com • gvproj.org
