James M. McPherson is George Henry Davis '86 Professor of American History Emeritus at Princeton University. His Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era won the Pulitzer Prize for History and his For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War was awarded the 1998 Lincoln Prize. His other books include Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution; Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam; and Hallowed Ground: A Walk at Gettysburg. He is a past president of the American Historical Association.
