This video is a 5-minute sample of a 20-minute dance. The sample jump cuts through the piece, showing small parts of the beginning, middle and end.
Originally commissioned by Groundworks Dance Theater (David Shimotakahara, AD) in Cleveland, OH, "Tipping Point" is a 20-minute dance for 5 dancers which is almost completely situated on the floor and set to an original score by Sarah Murat. The piece has four, internal "chapters" which unfold slowly by adding tiny, incremental shifts to the vocabulary that build on one another and grown in energy and scale. The dancers work with a structured set of rules that create the parameters for when and how to use the material. The strong concentration needed to maintain the rigor of the score in combination with the progressively physical demands of the material create a kind of focus and intensity which becomes the energy of the piece. The five dancers in this video are: Bianca Cabrera, Aiko Kinoshita, Ricki Mason, KT Niehoff and Janine Tiede.
