This is a helicopter tour I took over Moorea, French Polynesia. I was shooting footage for a hotel chain. I finally got around to editing the rest of the footage into a short video.

Shooting from a helicopter is tough! There is constant shaking and its very hard to hold the camera still. Thus...the only solution is to use alot of the Smoothcam function in FCP.

The song is "Hearts on Fire" by Cut Copy.

Shot on a Sony V1U.

Some super smooth shots there Jon! Some of them look like you used a Wescam mount! Nice job.

I thought the V1U was a CMOS camera, did you have any weird vibrations showing up in your footage from the rolling shutter vs. helicopter?
  • Jon Rawlinson plus 1 year ago
Ya the V1U is a CMOS camera. The only weird issues came from smoothcam in FCP. I wish there were actual settings for it. It just automatically analyzes the footage than zooms and crops - thus you get some weird waving motion on certain shots.

I know it's a little non-conventional, but there are a couple great after effects methods for smoothing out your film. I think it's great considering the conditions, but every once in a while you can spot the interlacing. It's gorgeous nonetheless. Answer me this: if you could shoot again, what would you do different?
  • Jon Rawlinson plus 1 year ago
Hmmm. If I could shoot again I would use a Sony EX1. Also I screwed up by not doing a reverse telecine before editing. That why you see the interlacing, because the V1U doesn't shoot true 24p.
  • Kjewbee plus 1 year ago
    great stuff!

indeed, too bad its interlaced but the scenary is overwelming enough not to notice that.
  • Jon Rawlinson plus 1 year ago
I fixed the interlace problem! Now it looks great!

I also fixed the contrast...it was too heavy before!
  • james curtis 1 year ago
    huge improvement, great footage!
  • Gabriel Soares 1 year ago
Actually V1U do shoot 24p... The 24p signal is converted in 60i to record on tape, by adding some duplicated fields in 3:2 ratio. Once in computer, you need only set the software to remove 3:2 pulldown. The Sony Vegas Pro 8 do it automatically...

    Hello Jon
I notice that your video is interlaced, you can de-interlace the video very easely with the plugin provide in FCP.
Anyway this video is very nice and shooting from an helicopter must be an intense experience.
Thank you for sharing this video

    very, very beutiful shots!
although FCP does a decent job on smoothing out a shaky footage, try using AE motion stabilization for even better results (though you'll have to spend more time and do some manual stuff as well).

keep up the good work, man :)
  • Jon Rawlinson plus 1 year ago
Ya Ill have to try AE next time

    thanks!

    Very nice!
Did you consider using a steadicam?
  • Kjewbee plus 1 year ago
I think there is not enough room in a heli to use that + shooting downward is pretty difficult with a steadycam ;)
  • w.pasman 1 year ago
You have pretty small steadicams like the merlin, they might fit? And I have done shooting down with the merlin. Yes it takes a bit of set-up time.

Nice work, It looks like FCP steady cam works better than the built in one in some of the cameras out on the market.
  • Jon Rawlinson plus 1 year ago
It works pretty good but its painfully slow.

    Niice!
Too bad you see the reflections and scratches on the glass of the helicopter sometimes... Didn't you shoot from the open window?
Where can we see the ad you shot the stuff for?

Maybe I'll be able to shoot out of a small airplane flying above our city (Delft, historical city) with a Z1U.. :)
  • Jon Rawlinson plus 1 year ago
    Thanks.

Well the window was only open on the left side and it was very small.
