Here is a short test with the steadicam Merlin, I didn't care about the focus... just testing the stability. I received the Merlin yesterday, not much experience with it, I need to practice... a lot, its not as easy as I expected.

is this goblin?, nice shots by the way, i am eager to see more with this steadicam.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Cnes, Goblin??
  • Cnes 1 year ago
ah yes, Goblin. A wonderful 70's prog band from italy. Worked closely with Dario Argento in his horror films. One of my personal favorites. Check out the films Suspiria, and Tenebrae, and Deep Red. Some of his best. BTW, I put a couple of Goblin tracks for you to download.

    Get them here:

    enjoy!

wait a minute , how did you avoid getting and shutter roll.
    You were moving awfully fast.
BTW: what lens were you using?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
With this set up you can move pretty fast and avoid rolling shutter... the lens is a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

What I want to know is whether manual focusing is possible when using the Steadicam.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
You cant, if you touch the ring, you're out of balance.
  • Leo Tsang 1 year ago
Is there a solution around it?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
only an electronic remote Follow-Focus can control focus on a Steadicam.

Nice test, I am really confuse now your test is great make me want a D90 like right now but I see all the jello effect everywhere, but not on your video is it just because of the steadycam ? or to have the jello effect you have to move really fast ?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Mike!

You have to be very careful while handling this camera, no jerky or fast movement when you handheld it. If you have steady hand you can have great result without jello effect.

While in the steadicam though, the D90 can be moved pretty fast without the Jello effect.

Thanks for you detail answer it really help me out on the choice I will go buy a Nikon my quest for DOF will be satisfied for now. I saw on your video the Champlain Bridge I live in Verdun have a good weekend
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
As you can see from my first clips uploaded in Vimeo, They where shot with an FX7 and an homemade 35mm adapter.... I sold the FX7.

I'm satisfied with the DOF from the D90 and I love the stealth mode... you can go anywhere and no one give you a second look... was not the case with the FX7+35mm Adapter.

Have a good weekend too... neighbor :)

    Bonjour,

  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
    Bonjour Emmanuelle,

  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago

This Merlin you bought is really a great solution for the D90!! You were smart when you thought of it. Still we can't focus or zoom in and out but the Merlin can do a very good job. Also, I just notice this, with the Merlin you can make a good scary movie especially with the kind of walking you do hehe :-0. You walk with it like what photographers do in scary movies. You just need to replace the children and the girl in your video by scary people..

Do you know some good cheap models of the Merlin? (around $100 to $150) and If you don't mind asking you another question, I just got a D90 and wondering what are the most important movie sittings that I can play with in the D90. I know what AE-L can do and I also play with the white balance and picture control but how about the ISO, shutter and aperture.. etc?

    (sorry for my English)
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
    Hi Ahmad,

You will find everything you need to know about the D90 there: dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=146661

There is some cheaper steadicam on the market, just search ebay for steadicam or google.

    Hi Roland,

    Me trompé-je ?

    Stef

  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
    Merci Lugdunum!

Interresante l'histoire concernant Mike Oldfield... :)

    Really nice work Roland!

Do you remember what aperture and focal lenght you used for this and your other Merlin video?

The depth of field on this one looks shallow, but the other one is deep.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Joseph!

Aperture was f2.8 and 17mm for this one, Don't remember the aperture for the other one but focal length was 17mm and I set focus on infinity.

WOW! this is great! I was thinking about selling my HV30 and all accessories which could get 1100. D90 kit is 1200 some in US. This may have convinced me. How did you manage to keep everything in focus?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
Thanks Adam! I just set focus to infinity.

  • Pierre Petit 11 months ago

Hi R, do you really recommend the Merlin with the D90?
I have to decide if I buy one this week, but I would like to be sure, because I read some comments that its really difficult to balance. thanks so much
  • Roland Cadieux plus 2 months ago
Not really, I sold mine after 2 weeks, I made a DIY version of the merlin and it work perfectly.
  •
  • vitorpeixoto plus 2 months ago
thanks for the reply. I read about the DIY. Ay tips of how to get a DIY or even make one? I saw this cheap model from India, but also read negative reviews. thanks!
  • Roland Cadieux plus 2 months ago
This is the first DIY steadicam that I made: vimeo.com/2708558

I now have an update version using this gimbal with a new design that I made:

    vimeo.com/3822991

I will upload a new clip with my new version very soon.

There must be some great steadicam at low price around though.
