28. Heath and Samara - Engagement Shoot - HD

Katie is shooting Heath and Samara's wedding in December.

We recently had the opportunity to do an engagement shoot with them. At first Katie and I were going to play it safe and do the shoot in Toowoomba but after chatting about it we decided we were up for something different.

Samara and her mum scouted out the locations on the morning of the shoot. It was a bit of a risk as both locations were ones that Katie and I had never seen before.

Enough said, the risk paid off :)

Dude! What can I say but AWESOME! You have the skills to pay the bills! I love your color! It's so Rich! How do you get it to be so vibrant? It seemed you shot at sun, set so no harsh lighting. what do you do to your HV30 to make it look so good? Do you shoot in 24p or 60i (25 or 50). Keep it up man your work is really inspiring! You have a great eye and a gift!

    Thanks Mark!

Yeah, starting with nice soft light is the #1 thing that can improve the quality of your footage. I've found that it gives me a lot of latitude when colour correcting my footage, I can really push it pretty hard. We always try to shoot at that time of day if we can.

With the HV30 I shoot in TV mode (50i) and then de-interlace my finished video when I export it from Premiere.

  • Matt you did an amazing job, really good mix of shots. The shot at 0.35 even nature turned in on with the 2 birds flying past in the background. The song fits perfectly, Well done!!

I can say just - Awesome! Very like the fist shots espesially when soundtrack beats work with exposure. It's make a tempo and define mood for all work. Water shots with snags sticking out of water = art.

    that was the hv30 ??
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Yeah, I shot this with an A1 and a HV30+Brevis.
this looks stunnin!!! i cant believe that you can get that quality out of the hv30. so can you tell a difference between the a1 and the hv-30 brevis combo in terms of quality? and do you use an external monitor for focusing or is the hv30 lcd with focus assistant enough ?
  • Matt E plus 11 months ago
Hey Malek! I just used the HV30 LCD with the peaking function enabled - does the trick for me. Now that I've used them both for a while I can tell the difference between the HV30+Brevis and the A1+Brevis footage. The A1 footage is a lot cleaner and obviously with that cam you can way more control over the image. It comes does to ease of use for me - the HV30+Brevis is just easier to handhold and that suits my style better I guess. When it comes to matching the HV30 footage with the A1 I think it all blends pretty nicely together.

Nice one Matt. Do you ever worry about tripping and dropping your camera in the water?
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Umm ... no. Not until you mentioned it. Now I'll be paranoid about it on future shoots ;)

That's what insurance is for :)

Awesome stuff, I love the color. I have a question...I have the XHA1 and I just ordered the Merlin, did you use them together? or was that the HV30
  • Matt E plus 11 months ago
Hey Tom, thanks! I only ever use the A1 with the Merlin. The HV30 is almost always attached to the Brevis.

the shot at 1:19 reverse playback was a great/clever touch that made it more than just two people strolling through grass.
  • Matt E plus 6 months ago
Thanks Zach! It's a bit weird, but I really like that shot.

Hey Matt. Great job. I was wondering what else did you use in your rig? Your steadicam shots looked really smooth. But I noticed you also had these rising crane looking shots. Did you actually use a crane? Fantastic work I loved it.
