I was so happy to be a part of this project too. CNN embracing video by, as Jay Rosen says, "People Formerly Known as the Audience," is exciting.

I enjoyed capturing some great moments on Austin. I wrote a blog post describing my shots:

    offonatangent.blogspot.com/2011/03/cnn-ireport-teams-up-with-vimeo-at.html

It was a also fun to meet the other shooters at the CNN Grill in Austin. Thanks CNN!

Not to be a stick in the mud, but personally, I don't think you captured the essence of Austin Texas at all. Your selection of shots seem a bit amateurish, and could just as well have been shot in New Orleans or LA. Austin is also known for its music scene (SRV in particular), and it would have been better to flavor the video with Austin-based music, instead of a strange New York band. Very disappointing, esepcially with names like CNN and Vimeo used to promote this.
  • Daniel Hayek staff 11 months ago
It's ok if you feel this doesn't convey the essence of Austin. This is a first attempt at collaboration and time was pretty limited with the editor being flooded with footage from multiple sources. Think of this as a teaser of sorts to an experience. While the music was not to your liking I have no doubt that this relationship will blossom into something very unique and worthwhile in the Vimeo community. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
  • Patrick McLoad pro 11 months ago
Daniel: I didn't mean to come across as destructive as opposed to constructive, but didn't want to get into discussing particular shots. True, I don't know what kind of pressure and/or constraints there were in getting this edited, as this is true with almost every video anyone produces. So I just commented on what I watched. The video quality looks fine; I just question some of the shots that were submitted and chosen, that's all.

I also realize your shooters had very little time and resources at their disposal, but the clip below is something along the lines that I was hoping for, even though it may be an unfair comparison between the two videos. But THIS is Austin, Texas ! :-)

    Hey Patrick,
No worries, thanks for your civil response. It's funny though, the video you linked to while well shot and produced, has music that I don't think best compliments the footage. I guess personal preference is hard to please all around, but thanks for sharing. Again, this was all produced with significant time constraints and while not perfect it's a fair start to what can hopefully develop into a strong relationship.
  • Patrick McLoad pro 11 months ago
Yes, you have a good point about the music.
    Peace.
  •
  • Jonathan Marks plus 11 months ago
Indeed, I agree with Patrick the film captured impressions of the event but not the story. Austin is about spectacular conversations.

Hey, I think the video is great.

But my honest opinion is that the text is quite distracting. It doesn't seem to be tracked to the shots very well, maybe it would have been more successful as a static treatment.

Great work though guys and congratulations on the partnership.
  • Wii Yatani plus 11 months ago
Agreed. Something about the text treatment and font choice seems...unfinished? I'm not sure about the text seen at 1:12. It's sliding everywhere when it seems like the intention was to track it to the rail.

Regardless, I like the video and it does a good job of capturing the mood/emotion @ Austin.
