Probably one of the best i've seen in over a year of watching Vimeo....

    Nice Job!

Could you list what you used to do it all? Camera, color etc??
  • Carrotkid 1 year ago
    Thanks, glad you liked!
I filmed this with a Canon XH-A1 and all post work was done with Final Cut Pro including CC. I only color corrected a few shots that were really bad and just left the rest. All shots were contrast enhanced using the Levels filter in FCP.
  • TheWakePlace.com 1 year ago
Thats a good load of color you got from the A1 - i use one myself :)

One more question - did you use a custom preset on the camera when filming?
I don't see much noise in the shots, and from my experience the A1 gets a little noise with any gain increase. So could you also spill the beans on the gain you were using?

    Thanks!
  • Carrotkid 1 year ago
Yes, I always shoot with the gain all the way down to -3 (even with my Letus lens adapter) and then add as much light as needed to brighten the shot.

I also use the '-3 Clean' preset that I found over at DVinfo.net and I have set the camera's auto exposure level to -0.5 which helps to darkness the blacks better without the overall image being to dark.

With this film though I altered the image quite a bit in post but if you want to realy see the results of the setup I mention about see my film 'Canyon Pathway' - that film was shot with the same camera settings and none of the shots were altered at all.

    Hope this helps!
  • TheWakePlace.com 1 year ago
To be a real pain, do you know where the preset info is on DVinfo? I have been looking for a little while and can't seem to locate the '-3 Clean'......

    how annoying am i :)

    Thanks again
  • Carrotkid 1 year ago
Yeah, just did a quick search there and couldn't see it either, hmm, not sure where I found it. Sorry, it's actually it's called '-3dB Clean'. Here is the settings for it:

The best part is the audio. Great job recording all that sound and adding it in during the edit.

    You have skills man.
  • Matt LaVoie 11 months ago
I agree with Guilmette- Even if you just listen to the audio without looking at the video, the pumpkin carving sounds are very cool. Very... satisfying.
  •
  • Richard Mattsson 1 year ago
Astonishing - I would have trouble just separating the seeds from the goop, let alone animating it so cleanly. The breaking up of the carved jack is a really interesting touch too.

100% cool!! How did you do the stop animation, is there a feature on the xh-a1? or did you edit out frames where you were moving the stuff in and out? I watched a few times, love it.
  • Carrotkid 1 year ago
Thanks! The A1 has a photo mode so I use it to snap the individual frames onto an SD card and then assemble them together in post.

I love how you made reference to the other films in this! The Baked Apple and the timer from the other video! I laughed! I really wanna show my preschoolers this one because we had our own gooey carving experience and they would love this!!! I need to get this on disc!

Oh, and the sound effects! Perfect as always! I also like how you make it kinda gory but in a light and fun way...the pumpkin's brain juices flowing at the moment the top was cut! brilliant!

  • Stacy Moon 1 year ago
amazing. was the stop animation done just by literally taking individual shot by shot or is there some special mode on your camera that sped the process up?
  • Carrotkid 1 year ago
Thanks Stacy - yes, the stop-motion and pixilation (animation of people) where shot one frame at a time. And for most of the shots I held each image for 2 frames to give a bit of a choppy feel to the motion.
