Penelope Shuttle reads her long poem 'Missing You' from the DVD-book IN PERSON: 30 POETS, filmed by Pamela Robertson-Pearce & edited by Neil Astley (Bloodaxe Books, 2008). Pamela has been filming poets reading their work for Bloodaxe's archive, website and DVD-books. This poem is from Penelope Shuttle's REDGROVE'S WIFE (Bloodaxe Books, 2006), a book of lament and celebration. Its focus is the life and death of her husband, the poet Peter Redgrove, coupled with the loss of her father. Here grief, depression and ageing are confronted with painful directness, but transformed into life-affirming and redemptive poetry, most powerfully in the long 24-part poem ‘Missing You’, which she reads in full in the film. Penelope Shuttle has lived in Cornwall since 1970. We filmed her on the afternoon before a reading in York in November 2006.
