Well, by watching the whole movie, it's really difficult to say what you guys feel about these poor kids. I might be wrong, but it seems your main goal was to show how cool they were (especially it regards your titles). I'm simply missing the whole idea. I live in Ukraine. And we know about Chernobyl Disaster as much as anyone does. And all the kids who suffered from it's consequences are already dead. Well, I just can't understand it, sorry. BUT, I liked the mood you created. It was also surprising to hear Ukrainian language.
  • Les Chernokids 10 months ago
Hey Chris, we tried to create a short film about resilience; the way people 'bounce back' after a trauma. You can either choose to talk about the details of a tragedy or show the what rises from the ashes.

We read and looked at a wide range of photos especially from inmotion.magnumphotos.com/essay/chernobyl (Paul Fusco) and it is heartwrenching. But we also saw pictures of kids playing.

I don't think our intention was to trivialize the consequences of chernobyl and give it a 'happy-ending', and I'm sorry if it seems this way.
  • Chris Woods plus 10 months ago
Thanks for the explanation. Now it's clear for me, more or less. Your point of view is quite interesting. I just couldn't find the main idea at once. I understand how much work has been put to it. And you've got a pretty powerful and atmospheric movie. Sorry, if I offended you. Good luck, mate.
  • Justin J Bacon 10 months ago
Thanks for the info. I must say I was initially a little upset after watching this as well. Perhaps you could include some of this info in the description. It really is a very touchy subject. The photographs of these children and their nightmarish conditions have haunted me for many years.

Nevertheless, I must applaud you guys for making such a moving piece. The execution was perfect.

I've been there. There's no such nice adventures and radioation monsters - you should see less
    of those "science fiction".
Chernobyl is a very sad place. With a very sad history.

Wonderful work. It's impressive how you're able to make us feel confusion, loss, pity, hope, anger, fear and fun in such a short piece. I was especially impressed by the radical change in animation style during the fantasy fight scene.

This was an absolute treat to watch.

Wonderful piece, my only complaint would be that the fight scene interrupts the feel tremendously, whether that was your intention or not, it just feels very out of place to me. Still lovely story, animation, and overall a fantastic film.

Very scary. An extremely ominous and creepy foreboding of what seems to be an imminent future, especially in light of what is occurring in Japan at this very moment with their nuclear plants and how this 'could be a possibility' (just like the early Star Trek series ... Flip Phones and many things 20 years ahead of their times).

Production Values: Incredible ! I won't be able to sleep tonight.

    great idea and refined execution.
though the kids' accents sound rather weird, especially for a native speaker. voice actors have been cast among diaspora?
  • Les Chernokids 10 months ago
    hello

The kids mentioned in the credits that we recorded were not comedians and are learning ukrainian at a saturday school in paris called "Saint Volodymyr". Some not all are ukrainian natives. One or two soundbits are from Florence in the team who listened to a translation, acted and recorded it.

They did all this for free and were wonderfully nice (we learned about Ukrainian easter egg painting for example !)
  • Zorge Zorge 10 months ago
then I stand corrected - they've done astounding piece of work. cudos to them and you!

I was born in Ukraine in the summer of 1986. I have two eyes, two hands and one head, and I understand that the use of catastrophe to highlight your work - is unethical and unprofessional.
  • Les Chernokids 9 months ago
It's a fictionnal work about children in an area that almost killed/poisoned half of europe, and we took the liberty of making things up. It doesn't mean we are detached from the tragedy.

    Here's a poignant photo-article from The Big Picture: boston.com/bigpicture/2011/04/chernobyl_disaster_25th_annive.html
