As a naturalist, skimming these remarks, it appears to me that these students are all pretty much products of their upbringing. They are also profoundly contradictory an embedded in disparate cultures of superstition and mythology. How do they, as inquiring minds, justify belief in these myth systems if they can't all be right at the same time? Human nature is continuously puzzling to me. But somehow the word compartmentalize comes to mind. They don't really hear what they are saying.

Why is it that those that do not believe in God somehow think their opinion is more valid. The big bang theory and the theory of evolution are just that, theories. Waiting for the next great or not so great idea. Religion is no more a myth than any other hope. But if I was a hoping man, and I am, I would be happier with the hope that there is more to life than death.

    Brian,
I totally agree with you in your assesment of atheists.

I am a Mormon AND a scientist, I have a BS degree in Molecular Biologist from BYU. I actually took TWO evolution classes that were taught at BYU and I don't find Science and religion that conflicting at all, as a matter of fact the God that I believe in is the greatest Scientist in the universe (He is not Samantha Stevens or Jeanny or Chris Angel; to make this world he used something else rather than magic), not only did he create the rules, but he uses them in ways -which we will learn one day to do also- to bring about the immortality and eternal life of man. People like our naturalist friend don't understand that there is a God because the picture they have painted of him conflicts with the reality of what and who he is. They have the audacity of dictating what God should be like and behave like and when something happens that contradicts this idea they have of God then the conclusion of course is that there is no god, talk about backward thinking.

    Rickflick,
Of course there is difference between all the religions. Do you believe in evolution? Do you think that the pure religion of God, his gospel as taught to Adam would remain unchanged in this world through thousands of years? Adam knew of Jesus Christ and Baptism and the rest of the prophets like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and so on did also but even after they barely had left Egypt, the people of Israel was already contradicting the God that had saved them. Look around all the religions of the world and you will see that there are similarities among them, those similarities are remnants of the original truth that was taught by God to Adam and then as people fell away from the truth or just simply orally told the stories of what they knew but without having proper authority from God, they started adding mythology and superstition to it. Quick example, look at how different the Catholic church is today from what Jesus and more specifically Paul describe the church was like in Jesus' time. One contradiction that I find in you and all atheists is that they attack my faith and belief in myths and superstition and yet they can't prove to me beyond the reason of doubt that we are but an accident proving those theories to be myths as well. Is there proof of evolution? yes, but there is still a question that has not being answered by "naturalists" yet: Where did it all come from? Do you know how infinitesimal the chances are that we are here by accident? You have a lot of faith my friend, you just choose to place it on a different kind of god -which is what scientists suppose must have happened- instead of in God.

Wonderful opportunity to hear the students express their thoughts, but Sally Quinn? Please.....couldn't someone with a modicum of tact have been found? "Bernie....find me a Christian?" Rachel's interview clearly stated that she was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day- Saints......Ms. Quinn was ill-prepared and condescending....An atheist was not the best choice for an unbiased interviewer.....just the opposite is true......Noone is more cynical......Applause to the students for handling a very difficult interviewer......

    Kathy,
Glad to see someone took the words out of my mouth.
Said in the introduction to these videos:
"...No one is better equipped to lead this discussion than Sally Quinn"...

Her gaffe about not having a christian on the panel after grilling Rachel Espin for 17 min about Mormonism is entirely embarrassing on her part, I couldn't believe I was witnessing such a blunder but after doing some looking into Sally Quinn she is known for these type of idiotic actions. I guess over time in her career that makes her a capable and equipped idiot.

I felt that Ms. Quinn did a fabulous job. I'm sorry that some felt she was being condescending in any way. What I find intriguing is that she is an Atheist learning so much about various religions. I think that it gives Ms. Quinn a very unbiased opinion of each religion. This makes it easier for her to ask questions with an open mind, rather than trying to steer the panelists in a direction with more accordance of her own beliefs. I felt that each question asked was geared toward the individual and their understanding, not just questions from a flat list.

I find it interesting that the only source of information the interviewer had before interviewing the Mormon girl was reading books by people who were ex-Mormons. A bit more than biased I think.

Never the less, the young lady was more than up to the task.

I think Ms. Quinn was the right person to be there. I do not resent the fact she was out of line, thanks to the very eloquent answers from Rachel. I think she couldn't hear totally what Rachel was saying, she probably was so busy in her mind thinking WOW! ... and she just missed the point how Jesus Christ plays an important roll for a member of the Mormon Church, even for those who are inactive or not-very active. Our testimony about the divinity of Jesus Christ and the testimony that every member tries to gain all throughout our lives is our purpose in life. The first testimony for a person who decides to be LDS is based in personal revelation and is a consequence of - and an act of - faith. So even former members may not agree with some doctrines but they can not deny the testimony that Heavenly Father lives, Jesus Christ lives and The Church is restored.
I think Heavenly Father, who loves Ms. Quinn, just placed her right there that specific day for her to learn about how much she needs to learn, in spite of all her career experience and the success she had accumulated.
