Blinky™
Soon every home will have a robot helper.
Don't worry.
It's perfectly safe.
Written, Directed & Edited by Ruairi Robinson
Starring Max Records from "Where The Wild Things Are".
Cinematography by Macgregor
Music by Olafur Arnalds courtesy of Erased Tapes
Funded by Bord Scannan na hEireann / Irish film Board
Budget was 45k euro - for the shoot. Visual effects budget was a grand total of zeeero. I designed Blinky, modeled him in 3D and played both the his voice and the body mocap performance. And did most of the VFX. Thankfully all footage of me in the skintight mocap suit has been permanently destroyed.
Visual effects were completed over a period of 9 months, of hell. There's a reason why you don't see too many wet CG characters in movies even with 100 million dollar budgets. It's really, really hard.

BLOGGED HERE: hypemuch.com/2011/03/28/blinky-a-short-film-by-ruairi-robinson/
Also, blogged it here :D - bit.ly/roboblinky
but it really does deserve a shout out...
(as opposed to impure and sullied, like after watching it!)
although seriously, who reads comments before watching videos?!
Fantastic work as ever. Great tone, loved the look and shifts of mood. Been a fan since 50% Grey. Looking forward to your 1st feature.
Congrats!
how did you accomplish the rain on blinky? it looks amazing.
The video looks a little weird though, a lot of stuttering. Looks like the framerate is all weird but it's probably a compression thing or something. Noticable and distracting all throughout the film, and makes the credits very hard to read.
I assume the problem isn't on my end as no other Vimeo videos i've watched have ever looked like this.
It inspires very much!
Greetings: your personal robot
what ever happened to assimov's first law of robotics? hehe
such a great story
Excellent job! Very unexpected and original. But that poor kid is going to be typecast after this and "Wild Things." Nonetheless, I love the film and I love Blinky!
BTW, did you use the RED One for this one?

Am I the only one that kept thinking of Google's Android mascot?
But the production is amazing!
That's what you get for messing with R2D2!
Vx
Grat job.
