Soon every home will have a robot helper.

Don't worry.

It's perfectly safe.

Written, Directed & Edited by Ruairi Robinson

Starring Max Records from "Where The Wild Things Are".

Cinematography by Macgregor

Music by Olafur Arnalds courtesy of Erased Tapes

Funded by Bord Scannan na hEireann / Irish film Board

Budget was 45k euro - for the shoot. Visual effects budget was a grand total of zeeero. I designed Blinky, modeled him in 3D and played both the his voice and the body mocap performance. And did most of the VFX. Thankfully all footage of me in the skintight mocap suit has been permanently destroyed.

Visual effects were completed over a period of 9 months, of hell. There's a reason why you don't see too many wet CG characters in movies even with 100 million dollar budgets. It's really, really hard.

Agreed. I feel this is the first film about robots that really touches on the subject of being spoiled. I mean, if you have a robot to do anything for you, the point of effort disappears. When I saw the scene with him spilling the paint, it really moved me - seeing him so frustrated with the fact that his robot wouldn't provide a conflict. Let's see if more Blinky shows up :)

    Also, blogged it here :D - bit.ly/roboblinky

    Cool short. Really cool short.

The video looks a little weird though, a lot of stuttering. Looks like the framerate is all weird but it's probably a compression thing or something. Noticable and distracting all throughout the film, and makes the credits very hard to read.

I assume the problem isn't on my end as no other Vimeo videos i've watched have ever looked like this.
  • Ruairi Robinson plus 11 months ago
    Maybe turn off HD?
  • Daniel Hayek staff 11 months ago
This video is playing back normally based on our records, maybe try the html 5 player?
  • Austin Glass plus 11 months ago
I also noticed the stuttering, but it was only during the credits that I saw it.
  • Matt Wells plus 11 months ago
i think you just have to wait for the whole thing to load before watching. its def worth the wait too!
  • Kathryn Schroeder 11 months ago
I noticed a bit of stuttering in the beginning, but after pausing and letting it load for a bit, the stuttering went away.
  • Robert Rossello plus 10 months ago
I think it's a problem with dynamic resizing - in HD and scaled down to fit in the browser window, the video aliases, and this is most apparent in the title sequences. It goes away if the video is full-screened.

technically good animation, but why so much hatred towards machines? seems like it's fashionable these days to demonize robots. I dont remember single movie where robots were friendly and helpful since fuckin star wars :(
