Artist Statement by Jenna Dawn Maclellan:
My life and travel experiences have had a great affect on who I am and how I see the world. Each art piece I envision is developed from a certain moment in time. With this new work, I am trying to dismantle the 'baggage' I carry.
Through these experiences, I acknowledge that water, a simple yet essential element of life, is one of the most globally political and problematic subjects of our current time.
Therefore, I walked the length of Montréal Island from North to South on August 17 2010 following St. Laurent Street carrying a bucket filled with St. Lawrence water. This 12km walk, is half the distance a woman walks on average a day to fetch water for her family. I hope this gesture will inspire awareness surrounding problems related to equality and accessibility of clean water.
