Technique: A windshield wiper mounted webcam is processed by a laptop, creating a time lapse where the exposures overlap (no movement is lost). The audio comes from pitch-shifting recordings from a large solenoid (modified bass speaker) which were capturing most low-frequency vibrations (the higher-pitched sounds are music playing in the car). More here: rpi.edu/~mcdonk/AmbientLapse/

Highlights: circles around star park at 0:34, motorcyclist trying to show off at 1:21, passing at 1:49.

Notes: The original length was about 26 minutes. There is a cut near the beginning due to some corrupted video, but it's hard to see. My sister Kiera McDonald drove, chose the path and music.

Rushing around on a sunny day should be a hallucination :)

I've updated the description with some more info.

That one takes the cake so far Kyle! The stable yet moving cam platform really adds an interesting dimension. I hope my silly test video on the bike was partial inspiration! ;-) The audio technique is nice too... at first I thought you had used a track of magnetosphere recordings until I got a little further in and realized the whiplike noises were corresponding to the motion of the car. Bravo.

The parts containing different speed motions (cars passing/slowing) was extra cool.

Thanks :) Your bike did inspire me, I first tested the solenoid on a bike (where it works better, I think)... I like the idea of using tires like record player needles. For the next one I'm thinking of taking a path on bike, from A to B then B to A, and combining the results after reversing one of them.

I'll look forward to the next one. Plus anything that gets you out of the car is a good thing. ;-)

Very cool. I liked the part with the motorcycle - like you were chasing it.

it's awesome kyle! have you tweaked the algorithm at all or is it still the same?
  • Kyle McDonald 2 years ago
Thanks! Same basic algorithm, but I'm still not sure about the spots/concurrency bug every now and then...
