On 21 January 2011, flora&faunavisions turned Berlin’s Tempodrom into a stiring arena of style and technology: in a synergistic clash of fashion and film, iconic references and futurist chic, the ffv team once again concepted and created a visual and visionary backdrop for designer Michael Michalsky’s bi-annual StyleNite. Our task: the show’s creative video direction, a clever video & live camera concept (including all content and programming) for a dynamic, split-screen live video presentation of the outfits on the runway and – on the night itself – the show’s overall direction to ensure the smooth interplay of video and styles on the venue’s stark, sharp-edged catwalk.
After all, the bar was set high by the designer’s ambitious concept, blending attractive attire and full-on entertainment. Bridging the gap between retro cool and tomorrow’s sleek vision, Michalsky’s latest Fashion Week spectacle spliced the designer’s upcoming ‘Urban Nomads’ Fall/Winter 2011 reveal with the German premiere of ‘Tron:Legacy’, this spring’s 3D blockbuster.
On the night itself, top models like Toni Garrn und Pat Cleveland found themselves caught in the spotlight – and on the venue’s 18-metre screen: here, a pre-designed ffv template of dynamically changing picture-in-pictures presented the outfits from all angles, framed by a directional abstract animation. Hosting content from a total of four pre-programmed camera angles, these flexible elements could open, widen or close to suit a variety of edgy, yet harmonic combinations of screen formats and numbers. Thus cut and shaped to the night’s choreography, the event’s scenes and screens came together in a cool, coherent collage of each outfit’s look and details … and helped to prep the audience for the upcoming audiovisual rollercoaster ride: the German ‘Tron:Legacy’ premiere, backed by the equally retro-futurist soundtrack of French electro enfants terribles Daft Punk.
The overall message of this immersive aesthetic onslaught? Go bold, go back – and fast-forward to a racy future.
