NEX FS 100 Video Blog
This is a Worldwide Exclusive.
Not only did I contribute to the design of this camera but we managed to get a prototype and shoot a music video a few weeks ago. I believe we are the first independent team to shoot anything with the NEX FS100.
When I got the call we were told we could have the camera for a little over 24hrs.
We wanted to do more than just simply test it. But also we wanted to see what we could get out of the camera with stock lenses and recording internally.
So James from hangmanstudios.com teamed up with Den from fstopacademy.com and we pulled off this amazing shoot in 48hrs. Needless to say we didn't get much sleep but we valued the opportunity and wanted to shoot as much as we could in as many environments as we could.
We especially wanted to push the low light capability and use the in camera media. It shoots to SD cards, Sony Memory sticks and also has a 128GB FMU which is a solid state pack that integrates with the camera and will give up to 10 hrs record time at 24mb/s AVC HD.
We shot everything at 24mb/s AVC HD and ingested into FCP and transcoded to ProRes 422 using Log and transfer.
Shot over a 36 hr period in one weekend on one of only 2 prototype NEX FS 100 Cameras in the world.
We used 3 lenses:
A Sony Alpha 50mm f1.4 with alpha to emount adaptor
A E mount 16mm f2.8
The Stock lens 18-200 f3.5-5.6

This one is just the solo or budget filmmaker camera, it's so small I can't imagine it being used realistically for anything but.
I'd like to see him use the buttons/screen while wearing gloves.
Rant aside, looks really good.
Sony website is stating $6500. list with Sony E-Mount 18 to 200mm zoom lens. seems competitive with the Panny AF-100. and the elusive RED scarlet. This truly is an exciting camera!
FS100 is not a very pro camera (as the codec says). F3 is only for large business productions.
Misses a very pro camera large sensor HD. That is, all the features in cameras designed to date, but with a large sensor and interchangeable lenses.
No HDSLR-no ibryd camcorder like these
So if I understand correctly, this camera will use still camera lenses, as opposed to video camera lenses, correct?
lack of ND filter disappoints me but im very sure this baby shoots wonderful footages.
Den, Not trying to flame but i just dislike the usability and design.
Thanks Den for this exceptional complete report on this camera, including a music video.
Thank you for the test
So Great review and explanations and nice video . .
Nice about the Z1 / sony batteries fitting and providing decent charge. Did you guys shoot at 25fps ?
SO..
F3 sensor / S35 - iso 800 native
AVCHD 24 Mbps native codec
SD/128GB SSD storage
HDMI output 8bit 4:2:2 (?)
RE: framerates
1920x1080 @ 24 / 30 / 60 fps ( US MODEL )
1920x1080 @ 25 / 50 fps ( UK MODEL )
^ is that correct ? so the UK / AUS / PAL model will not do 24p ??
just going off these:

thanks again for the information + music video!

Nigel Cooper in his review has some very serious issues with the build quality. What's your take on this?
dvuser.co.uk/content.php?CID=268
At the same time, interframe vs intraframe codec. Are you sure that in FS100 "PRO" is only in name???
The camera wildly outperforms those.
on a budget it's maybe an idea to wait for 5dmkiii to come out in order to see what THAT will do, not to mention the other brands building on the same idea...we'll see! it looks amazing though, i want it!
thats pretty RETARDED!
Den if you helped design this why was such an important feature missed? The benefits of covert filming may be lost with a 4x4 matte box attached.
Remember: street price without lens is under $5K. STUNNING.
12.5 stops doesn't sound right and worthless crammed into 8bits.+highlights on this cam NOT IMPRESSIVE.Higher shutter will look bad(no good).ISO being lowered will effect latitude in a bad way ,Fader nd useless will do funny things, matte box plus filters will be at least extra £1250.If you need to shoot something @f1.4 in sunny16 circumstances this will be a pain.
Love the video. Its certainly an very interesting addition to the market. Its such a different form factor I guess its something you really need to play with to see if it suits you.
Couple of questions:
Does the gain allow you to go negative to electronically reduce it from 800 (think the F3 is 640)? Canon does this on the DSLRs under the hood which is why you can't easily rate them.
The card slots, how many are there and are they multi-format or is a separate slot for each type?
Only one card slot, but it will take SD, or Sony Memory stick. (one car goes in one way and the other - the other) In addition you can record on to the FMU which is 128GB and will take 10 hrs at 24MB/s.
Din;t see if you could go negative gain, Certainly could not on the prototype but please bear in mind it was not a fully functioning unit. Also I'm not certain it is ISO 800 , I just guessed that....we didn't have time to do test.
Cheers mate
I like the look, design and features of this camera, the modularization of it I think is an excellent design feature. Now it all comes down to price. Sub $6K - is that the value this camera will command from it's target market? Still a big step change in price from a DSLR and so the proof of the pudding will be....
I mention price for DSLRs.
Are you really complaining about the price of this-- under $5K (less lens)? Trick out a Canon 5D to make it the form factor of an HD camera and you still have a VERY inferior camera system that is huge, wonky, and about the same price!
My point is not the price of the unit. It's the value it will deliver for that price. Price is not the same as value which is not the same as cost. I am talking about the value of the camera which is the equitable return that it will deliver to me or any other aspiring film maker for the price one will pay for it. I making no conclusions on that, I'm simply stating that the buying decision for many will be tipped by the value. If you look at Philip Bloom's recently posted reviews I think you'll see he makes some interesting points on features (points of parity and points of difference) versus other cameras that stack up to the value.
I don't think at any point my comments were "complaining" about price. I am simply questioning the value....and time will tell in that respect.
:)
Do we know whether this will meet broadcast standards, BBC etc?
Can we use with nanoflash to record uncompressed?
The BBC needs to wake up and smell the coffee (and stop looking solely at "numbers".)
