I recently tried to render at least some animated humanoid with Ogre3d.
The only free animated mesh I could find so far is the standard robot. And I can't export nice animated Blender 2.56 meshes to Ogre because the exporter plugins are not there yet.
Even with the Ogre repository version supporting hardware instancing with vertex texture fetch (VTF) rendering is quite slow. The animation and scene node updates just take too long.
Looks like displaying more than 1024 animated agents with Ogre is not a good option at the moment.
