With the new ability to create applications and Flash plug-ins that interface directly with Adobe Creative Suite applications, we can streamline and extend the creative capabilities of the designer based on the processes and tools of the Generative artist.

Case in point: Apparel Combinatorics. The objective of this application is to interface with Adobe Illustrator CS4, automatically generate all possible color and pattern variations from a Swatches Panel and apply those variations to the different elements of the shoes, apparel and/or textile.

The final results can be saved as AI, jpg and/or pdf files – as well as automatically emailed or uploaded via ftp to a server when the process is complete. In this case, they are saved as hi-res jpgs for review and approval.

Really nice! Great to see use of programming as a production tool. Any resources you could recommend to learn how to do this sort of thing?

i'm a strong believer that design productivity and extending what is creatively possible via generative apps go hand in hand. for more info on how to drive the creative suite apps, i would start here: labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/PatchPanel; and then check out 'photoshop panels' here: adobe.com/devnet/photoshop/. although the current tutorials are aimed at photoshop, the process is very similar for illustrator and indesign.
