1. Showreel 2008 HD
My showreel was completed at the end of 2008. I've recieved a lot of really nice feedback from people since posting this on Vimeo.

I was offered a job at Pixar at the end of last year and started in februrary, woohoo! :D

Music is by Penguin Cafe Orchestra and is called Perpetuum Mobile.

A really big thank you to everyone who has commented on my showreel or taken the time to view it, I really appreciate it. :D

This work is very impressive. Congratulations! Can you share with us more info on how you did it besides the breakdown u show here? It would be very inspiring im sure. Also how much time it took you.
  • Peter Roe plus 3 years ago
    Hey, thanks.

I use 3 main software packages for making the work, XSI for Modelling, Photoshop for texturing and 3D studio Max for rendering. There's probably not enough space here for me to go into much detail sorry, but in terms of time, I would say it would condense down to about 6-9 months of work. I worked on these pieces on and off in my spare time over the past couple of years so it's hard to know exactly how long it took. Hope that gives you some insight. Thanks for your comment :)
  • Juan Carlos Oganes plus 3 years ago
Thank you for ur details Peter. Photoshop for texturing, interesting. You did some exporting to it frame by frame to do that as a filmstrip or maybe just the model and re-import to Studio Max as a texture map?
  • Peter Roe plus 3 years ago
I applied the textures first and then rendered the scene. I created the textures in photoshop first, applied them as materials to the objects and then rendered the scene before taking it into afterFX for compositing and colour grading. I also did seperate render passes for the volume light effects and subtle fog.

Hi everyone, thanks for commenting on my reel, very nice of you.

To Xuslik and SondreLangprojekt, I'm not too sure what you're asking, but the scene was completely CG, I created all the textures in photoshop by hand (excluding the graifitti), modelled all the objects in XSI and rendered them in 3D Studio Max with Vray. :)

    Thanks again
  • xuslik 3 years ago
ok. it´s to cheap-ccd-camera aesthetic, that's why i thought you used photos instead of textures. it's great... i love the sofa and the last ray of light.
  • Joshua Davis 3 years ago
being a cg artist and photographer, i guessing (mr Roe) you didnt know what a CCD is? basically a Charge Coupled Device is what captures the light coming into the camera and breaks it down to rgb. so i agree with xuslik, that the style you achieved with your lighting is great. the cheep film look on "a friendly hello" is beautiful and is a great touch.

Godonholiday, I went to uni but I taught myself most of what I know at home, especially during the last few years while working at a games company in Liverpool.

I've been absolutely obsessed with 3D now for over 12 years, starting back when I was 16 with free software that came with a computer magazine; it was called Visual Reality I think :) I've just gone on from there, and still love doing it.

    Thanks again everyone :)

Amazing Renders! How did you split the work between Softimage and 3DSmax?, ive found modeling/texturing and shading much better in XSI but better rendering in Max...was that your workflow?

Hey guys, thanks very much I'm really happy that everyone has enjoyed watching my showreel, it's taken over 2 years to finish.

Michael and Nathan, the music is called Perpetuum Mobile.

Carlos, the hardware used has been upgraded over the years. I started doing it on a 5 year old PC but recently upgraded to Quad Core and 64-bit Vista and 3D software to get it all finished this century! :D

Christian, I largely taught myself, started about 13 years ago but I did go to University and during that time learnt a lot from other students and from having a lot of time to spend doing 3D.

I'm surprised by the renewed interest, where did you guys see my work?

Sonnyme, glad to hear from someone living so close, thanks!

Thanks again everyone, really means a lot!

i too saw the showreel on the vimeo hd page. i am amazed how long it takes to get this completed, if you sat down and did the "hello" short from start to finish, how many man hours (not including rendering) would it take u think? nice job. i want to see more from you.

Excellent work!!!! I am getting into CGI and I am 16 as well. This reel is one of the most inspiring ones I've seen. Hopefully one days I will have an amazing compositing reel that will give an impression like yours ;)

I do have one question, how exactly did you go about making the fire, dirts, and explosion for the "Almost Home" clip (with the plane). Was it done in XSI?

great job on the composites.. and I'm obsessed with Giant Robots, so the storytelling was right in the sweet spot.

I remember when I used to crash my schools computer lab when I'd setup a network render over the weekend: 30 Pentium 90's chugging through a 3 minute animation that overloaded the Hard Disks... things have come a long way... congrats on all the great work.

  • B. Copping 3 years ago
Absolutely incredible. I've always been really fascinated by 3D work/art. But sadly I have no idea where to start or even if I have the artistic talent. So when I play a video game it takes me forever to finish as I look at EVERYTHING, lighting, texture, smoke, camera angles etc etc. What game studio in Liverpool? The Sony studio aka WipEout?

    Just amazing.
