Hong Kong is home to more than 7 million people. Amongst the high rise apartments, product designer Michael Leung founder of HK Honey, has created his own space bringing nature back into the metropolis one box at a time.

HK Honey is an organisation of Hong Kong beekeepers, artists & designers who aim to communicate the value of bees to the human food chain & the benefits of locally produced honey. With a network of bee farms and a design studio, Michael and HK Honey harvest local honey & design products and services relating to urban beekeeping.

This makes me think. I would like to have a bee hive in my backyard. Is it hard to maintain? What do I do in the winter? I'm seriously considering this.

This beekeeper opens his hives about once a week... Yikes! Bees do not want their homes disturbed so often. Opening the hive disrupts both scent and heat both of which are extremely important for the health of the hive. One can learn much about the hive's health by watching the bees at the hive entrance. Holistic beekeepers only open their hives once or twice a year. They provide conditions in the hives that encourage health to begin with so they don't need to constantly disrupt the bees.

I'd like to recommend two good books for this young beekeeper to increase his awareness: Towards Saving the Honeybee by Gunther Hauk and The Buzz about Bees: Biology of a Superorganism by Jurgen Tautz.
