part 1 THE GIRL WITH THE HORSE IN HER HAIR
a movie by Countess Alex Zapak
a review by Anthony Haden Guest
It’s only when you encounter something so startling in its sheer newness – of voice, of vision, of whatever – that you realize (glumly) how accustomed one has become to the recycled, the derivative, the ho-hum, the academic masquerading as the avant garde. Well, you experience such a startling newness in the full-throttle work of Alex Zapak.
Zapak, aka the Countess, is an epic artist and an epic performer and storyteller who creates a pictorial and sonic landscape of memory, myth and desire and she can zigzag smoothly from searing heartbreak through sardonic commentary to volcanic self-mocking humour. Her mastery of such means as laptop photography and digital collage is so pitch-perfect that we simultaneously inhabit a place as old as time and grief and as super-real as a dream. Oh, yes. Those songs! Zapak writes and sings like a soul possessed ,so fasten your seat-belts and prepare for a delectably, bumpy ride.
